Separate windows?? Probably/possibly although when I've opened each link I have chosen to Open Link in a New Tab and not New Window.

IF I do chose to open a link in a New Window then the taskbar icons are separate and not grouped.
    That would be why then.

New tabs would be in the same window and grouped to the same button on the taskbar.

Only separate windows would have their own separate buttons on the taskbar.

Thanks but that is not the way it's been for me for years!! I don't really understand why it has changed for me.

    Appreciate your advice anyway mate.

    Hey Mark,

I'm afraid the icons (always combine) or buttons (never combine) will still always group together for the same app if that's what you meant.
THAT REALLY SUCKS. We also do not wish our six open instances of wordpad to all be stuck together. Have you all got one of them 'bat files' for that by now? We are using version 1903. thank you.

There are several annoyances that can't seem to be changed. We would totally shut up about this one and all others if only someone would fix the XP magnifier so that it remains behind, hidden and unseen while playing a video in full screen mode, yet have magnifier remain open in the background. Just thought we'd mention it while you're here. Thanks

Didn't help. My registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced is already set to "2" but the icons are still combined. Any solutions?

    Hello zvit,

Just to verify, are the items on your taskbar showing as only icons (always combine) or as buttons with icons and text (never combine)?

Multiple instances of the same app opened will always show together on the taskbar though.

Attached is what I see on my new system (looks like combine) and what it used to look like on my old system (what "never combine" should look like and what I want now)

Ok, I figured it out. You also need to click on "Select which icons appear on the taskbar" and select "ON" by "Always show all icons in the notification area"

Ah, ok. That is for the notification area instead of the taskbar icons on the left side.
