    Alas, I spoke too soon. It looked like things were going to complete in good fashion, and then...

    Code:
    Applying image
    [==========================100.0%==========================]
    The operation completed successfully.
    Could Not Find C:\Users\sgage\iso_work\ISOFOLDER\MediaMeta.xml

    ========================================================================
    Exporting ESD Index 2 to a new boot.wim file...
    ========================================================================

    Error: 3

    The system cannot find the path specified.

    Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 6.3.9600.17029

    Error: 3

    The system cannot find the path specified.

    The DISM log file can be found at C:\WINDOWS\Logs\DISM\dism.log

    Errors were reported during dism export.
    Press any key to continue . . .
    After pressing the any key, there were hundreds of error messages flying by claiming that it did not have write access into the ISOFOLDERS\Windows\etc. directory...

    Code:
    ...
    ...
    ...
    ISOFOLDER\Windows\WinSxS\X86_WP~2.0_N - Access is denied.
    ISOFOLDER\Windows\WinSxS\X86_WS~1.0_E\wsdapi.dll.mui - Access is denied.
    ISOFOLDER\Windows\WinSxS\X86_WS~1.0_E - Access is denied.
    ISOFOLDER\Windows\WinSxS - Access is denied.
    ISOFOLDER\Windows\WMSysPr9.prx - Access is denied.
    ISOFOLDER\Windows\write.exe - Access is denied.
    and ending up with 'The syntax of the command is incorrect.' and dumping me to the command prompt. No iso was created.

    Any idea what that's all about?

    I was surprised after reading your last post, the script in this tutorial can normally not create ISO from WIM file. But you told that "The ESDtoIso tool had no trouble making an iso file from it", so I thought OK, I was wrong.

    You need to use some other tool to create an ISO from WIM, or follow the instructions in post #49 prior to upgrading to 9860.

    I had inferred from a post early in this thread that ESDtoISO had no problem working with wim files, and when it smoothly went through the early phases, right on up to 100% of applying the iso, or however it said it, that I was home free. I should know better at my age :-/

    Is there a standard tool for creating and ISO from a WIM? I'd like to make an iso if I can.

    Thanks for the tutorial Kari! I was having problems with the upgrade, but after creating the .ISO and burning a DVD I was able to do a clean install and everything seems to be working well.

    Your upgrade failed? Did you find the ESD file in C:\$Windows.~BT\Source or in C:\RecoveryImage?

    The upgrade worked, but I was having issues with it, like Windows not activating, but after doing a clean install all is good!
    So to answer your question, I did use the ESD file in C:\Recovery Image.

    Agree with that. My upgrade install was sluggish with file explorer and IE. Clean install fixed this for me. Good luck Charlie
