Unfortunately, it proved impossible, since any ESD files had been removed during setup.
Another member has similar experience as told in UUP to ISO thread. I will try to find why in some cases Windows.old no longer contains necessary files to make ISO.

I can try to make a VM with very limited space and see if that is a factor, unless that was what you were planning already...

You can do it on any size VHD, just shrink the C: drive in Disk Management gradually. First test, shrink to 30 or 20 GB, restore checkpoint / snapshot, shrink a bit more and so on.

I'm starting with 20 because a previous VM with VHD that size was always giving me space warnings until I would run disk cleanup.

OK, created an installation of 15048 in a VM with a 20 GB VHD, and there is 9.46 GB free. I suspect this will come close to what we saw with rogerwilco's system. After downloading and updating there should be very little space left (I'm guessing ~2 GB) and then after update there should be that much or less free.

Let's see if the files go missing in this situation.

Also, I just realized that this is in the ESD thread, but the issue I was referring to was in the UUP2ISO thread, and I'm going to do this the UUP method first.
