Is difficult to remember the paths and the names. Perhaps a batch file for this job ?

    I think it is :
    rmdir %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore *.bak /s
    rmdir %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download *.bak /s
    rmdir %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 *.bak /s
    del %SYSTEMROOT%\winsxs\pending.xml.bak

    Code:
    rmdir /s /q "%SYSTEMROOT%\SoftwareDistribution.bak"
    rmdir /s /q "%SYSTEMROOT%\system32\Catroot2.bak"
    del /s /q /f "%SYSTEMROOT%\winsxs\pending.xml.bak"

    Thanks for this.
    The .bat file worked.
    I finally got rid of

Some settings are managed by your organization

    in Setting/Windows Update.
Tried many other ways that did not work.

I reinstalled windows and now it's all cleared up, plus a few other problems. I'm good to go until next time.
    Thanks All.

Should this batch file still work on latest builds of Windows 10? There have been many changes to Windows 10 since it was first released 5 years ago.

If it should work then how long should it take to complete?

I have recently run it (as Administrator) on two machines and in both cases it stopped running part way through. I waited 10 minutes for it to start again but then I gave up and exited the cmd window. To be safe I restarted Windows immediately after. The first machine was an HP laptop I was trying to update for someone else and the second machine was my own (non-branded) desktop, which is currently on v20H2, build 19042.685.

    Hello wiganken,

Yes, the .bat file will still work in the latest Windows 10 builds.

Normally, it shouldn't take long at all (few seconds) for it to finish unless it gives an error about not be being able to stop a service.

I cannot install for several days now the latest W10 update KB4598242 with error code 0x80070003.
    W10 pro, 20H2, 19042.685.

Tried repeatedly all classic tricks (troubleshooter, DISM, sfc etc) with no success, although all tools report no problems.
Finally, I tried the bat file of this thread; it ran like a breeze, but no luck again.

Any ideas of anything else to try?
PS:please do not suggest to reinstall windows
