    Hey Brink,

    thanks for your answer!

This is what I did for "restore" (rename Catroot2.bak back to Catroot2). Without a working Catroot2 folder, I was not able to run .msc applications (device manger, disk manger, ...).

My problem was that it was not automatically recreated. I read in another thread in this forum, that chances are higher that it is refilled (empty folder with correct permissions already exists) instead of recreated. That's why I suggested it

My first post. Yay this worked!!!

I bought a HP Pavilion and set it up on Wednesday. It stalled while it was downloading initial updates and I couldn't get log on to my desktop. HP tech support got my computer running, but couldn't fix Windows Updates. I was reluctant to try a batch file. However, I had tried every other fix out there and nothing worked. The batch file worked and now my computer is up-to-date. Thank you so much!

ETA: I ran the batch file in safe-mode. It took about a minute to run.

I've just made a new build. Brand new install of W10. The retail USB media came with version 1709 (creators). I now wish to update the system via Windows Update. However,..it searches forever then stops not pulling down any updates. None whatsoever!

Also,..I tried to get into the Microsoft Store,..couldn't open that either. It just hangs trying to get access to the store.

What's happening? I even tried troubleshooting Windows update as Administrator and it's been going on for the last 15 minutes trying to detect any problems.

I don't know where to go from here.

I'm going to try that very shortly actually. How can this happen on a brand new install direct from the Retail USB stick? As soon as W10 installed I simply managed to get Windows activated automatically online with no problems but this Windows Updates just doesn't want to know.

Should I disconnect from the Internet when trying this .BAT file and what about Windows Update and BITS in Services? Should that be disabled while this is going on or leave well alone?

    Thanks.

The BAT file did absolutely nothing! Still cannot pull any updates. The dots just continually move in a loop.

More worryingly,..I can no longer get into 'Services'. I get a message that now says (IN BOLD RED) An Administrator has blocked you from running this app. For more information, contact the Administrator. (I am). Even if I right click on Services and Run as Admin, I still get the message.

    mmc.exe

    What do I do now.

It sounds like you didn't do step 6 immediately after running the .bat file.

    Try again.
