If wanted, you could try doing a repair install of Windows 10 to see if you may be able to update afterwards.

Agreed.
Try to avoid for the moment expecting Microsoft to rectify, like they should.
In two years on the same machine, I had already once to repair wu using dism offline, and another time to do a repair install in order to be able to update.
And the repair install (in Microsoft's wisdom) installed a driver for a usb wifi adapter, that caused series of problems (and could not accept to uninstall also). Had to loose much time to fully delete it from the system.
In short, really pi**ed with Microsoft, waiting to see if for a change will provide a solution, instead of expecting the user to become Mark Russinovich![]()
Currently I'm working with Microsoft tier 3 on error 0x8024001E.
This includes the BITS service failed to start.
Error 0x80004015

How to Reset Windows Update in Windows 10
Please consider updating the title so that it is easier to find using google search.
For example adding both components and BITS.

@Brink, there are occasions when Windows Update cannot be reset due to "The Windows Update Service could not be stopped". The latest example is here: Window's Update issues after reinstall and more
The solution is to restart Windows and runNet stop wuauserv
again.
Would you consider adding a message saying that a restart is necessary when the service cannot be stopped? I found the following line in your script:
echo Cannot reset Windows Update since "Windows Update" (wuauserv) service failed to stop.
Hi,
Attempt to DOWNLOAD was blocked by the error message of Reset_Reregister_Wi... was blocked because it could harm your device.
My original problem was in updating to the version 20H2 from 1903. It appears everything went well and it restarted. But when I checked the version number, it still says 1903. What could be the source of the problem?
How did you upgrade to 20H2?
Hi, Matthew,
I have tried Settings>Update&Security>Windows Update>Download and Install.
It took several hours, but finally it requested to restart which I did.
After that Run winver, which says Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.1440).
