@Cliff S, it's good to know it can be done - now all we have to do is track down the elusive registry key so we can have another @Brink tutorial :)

My test machine (and ocd) may help there :)
I'm wondering if it was because of the pre(view)- General Release ISO I used...: Cumulative Update KB4043961 Build 16299.19 for PC Insider - Page 78 - Windows 10 Forums

Can anybody explain the real point of that switch.

I though the whole point of a metered connection was to prevent updates!

The only thing I can think of is it acts like a global override, so you do not have to hunt for the metered connection switch (and each connection can be different).

I guess it enable you to get updates, then revert to metered connection with minimum fuss?

Problem is if you forget to uncheck it again.

    Hey Martin, :)

By default, Windows 10 will automatically download and install updates, except on metered connections. In that case, it'll automatically download only those updates required ti keep Windows running smoothly.

That setting is basically to allow automatic updates even over metered connections. It is not to toggle on/off automatic updates itself. Only for over metered connections.

    Hello @monstertruckpa, :)

I can't do ready made .reg file for this since it varies too much for what it can be set with for the number of days.

You could export the "Settings" registry key from OPTION TWO once you have it set how you want.

Just a heads up, if you happen to use the home editions, tweaking the registry keys actually work. Due to some recent disaster, I had to reinstall windows and tested my luck, because Windows Update was offering me the upgrade to 1709 (which I will skip, sounds problematic), tweaking the defer feature upgrades value actually made it unavailable again, and I could just install updates as usual.

in short, registry tweaking as you state in this tutorial works for home editions, @Brink :)

Thanks for the tutorial, once again

    Hi Shawn,

The options to defer updates are missing in Advanced Options for my system. This issue has been discussed some in the 16299.98 thread but so far a solution has not been found. I had checked the registry settings listed above and they match what you show. I have some registry tweaks and I have the managed by organization message but I have removed all tweaks and restarted the system and the defer updates options are still missing. I am also on RP if that makes any difference. I have not done a repair install. Any idea why they have gone missing?

    Hello @tracit99, :)

If you mean that you have an Insider build installed, then that would be why. These settings are not available in Settings for Insider builds.

Thanks Brink. I suppose RP qualifies as an Insider build.
