Using the Diskpart utility, how do I create a bootable USB stick (BIOS/UEFI) containing a customized edition of Windows 10 v1511?

    Thanks

When the Threshold 2 update was first out that was a 4 in 1 iso downloaded for both flavors of both editions when going to boot live. On the new laptop here I have basically the same problem of not being able to boot live from a flash drive and seeing the UEFI option greyed out in the bios setup ruling Legacy booting out. A live Linux stick failed to boot when tried as well.

I did however get that changed from the constant need to hit the "FN" key along with the second key designated to switch a function to the "F1-12" keys to be able to call up the boot device menu unlike the laptop it replaced. Couldn't even get into the bios on the old one. I would rather not need to carry the 10 dvd I got on Black Friday around with me when paying someone a visit where an alternative 10 key as well as Recovery Drive would be something on the idea of what balubeto is asking there.

I've just put W10 (clean install) onto a friends PC but initially had problems creating the USB drive. I used 'isotousb' to create the bootable drive and it seemed to complete OK, but then came up with an error message right at the finish saying that the drive had failed to create successfully. I tried again from scratch, this time using the Windows Media Creation Tool and that to seemed to go OK until the very end when it reported an error.

Both attempts were using a TDK 4Gb drive which should be enough (I picked just the x64 version) yet both failed.

Third time lucky, I used an 8Gb drive and that worked first time. I wonder if the latest build has crept up in size ?

Yeah, it would be more helpful if they would give a more descriptive error/failure message.

Indeed :) Anyhow, it all worked out OK in the end. Another satisfied customer (I hope).

    A couple of questions Shawn:

I've made a usb drive that has both 32-bit and 64-bit architecture on it. Presumably during use there is an option to choose the appropriate architecture?

I chose both architectures because I'm going to look at the laptop of a friend who is having problems upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10, and I suspect the laptop will be 32-bit where mine is 64-bit, and wanted to have just one usb drive for both. But I'm wondering whether your Option 3 would be better for a Windows 7 laptop?

And are there benefits to ALSO creating a recovery drive for Windows 10 or will this usb suffice? I have seen that it can be used for a repair install but am confused (as usual) about the difference between recovery and repair.

If I were to also create a recovery drive, I would want this to work on more than one laptop so would want to leave the option about system files unticked (hope that makes sense). What would I lose by doing this?

    Thanks

    Hello Maggy,

If you were to do a clean install or upgrade with the 32/64-bit USB, you will be prompted to select which version you want to use like at step 4 below.

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1...n-install.html

A Windows 10 installation USB will also include WinRE, so there's no need to also create a recovery drive.
