Hello Calvin, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

When you activate Windows 10 with your Windows 7 key on the PC, a digital entitlement for Windows 10 for that specific PC will be created and stored on Microsoft's activation servers.

Anytime you install Windows 10 on that PC with an Internet connect, it will automatically be activated by the digital entitlement.

Correct, as long it's installed on the PC it has the digital entitlement for.

ok, let me try to get this straight.

I'm away to put another HDD into my main PC to get the upgrade

all I need to do is.
    install win 7
    activate

then do this gatherosstate.exe file and do an update?

would save an age in updating win 7 to get the right updates installed before getting to update

    Hello bjproc,

If you like, you could just clean install Windows 10 and enter a qualifying product key for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 or buy a license in order to activate Windows 10. :)

No updates to Windows 7 are required to upgrade to Windows 10. Using setup.exe from the ISO file from within Windows 7, you can upgrade a non-SP1 Windows 7 with no updates installed at all. Of course all the other methods of installing Windows 10 remain valid too, clean install and activating by entering a Windows 7/8/8.1 product key, or using the gatherossstate.exe method.

The updates to Windows 7 (or 8/8.1) are only required to get Windows 10 to show up in Windows Update.
