Kyhi's recovery drive has everything you need:
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums

It has Macrium Reflect Free to make an image of your current hard drive (but you will need an external USB hard drive, or a second internal hard drive, or possibly a network storage location to store the image to). It has MiniTool Partition Wizard that can be used to wipe your hard drive clean, move partitions around, if needed, and it has a surface test utility. If you save a Windows install ISO (either 7 or 10) file to a USB drive, you can even mount it with Kyhi's recovery drive and run setup from the mounted ISO file to install Windows to your hard drive (make sure to select the custom install option). There is also a low level format utility on it.

I would highly recommend you download it and make a bootable USB/DVD with it and boot your computer from it to backup/check things out.

Ok Shawn I have got 10 via an upgrade on the older machine, have my new drive, the ISO and that gatherro stuff on the USB stick and am going to attempt a clean install as you suggested. I did watch the short video at the start of the clean install tutorial but don't remember seeing how it is activated with that command line as mentioned as in this tutorial.

Anyway if I do get lost I shall just have to reinstall 7 pro and upgrade like the other machine eh? Now installing the ISO what version does it give me 10 straight or Pro??

Sorry again to be a pain but just want to be sure of what I am trying to do.

Windows only installs whatever version you already have, meaning Home for Home or Pro for Pro
Hope this explains it for you. :)

During the install Windows will activate on its own. If you want to make a copy of your Windows key, use this program to find your windows key before upgrading, write it down. Then upgrade.

Great, then you should be all set, the only other thing you might want to do, is make a complete image backup 1st before upgrading, for insurance incase something goes wrong. Lots of us use Macrium Reflect free version for this.

Other than that you should be good to go! :) After you install Windows 10 and everything is running good, again make a complete backup. One of the main reasons folks have problems and spend hours trying to fix things, is because they never made a image backup, which would have saved them a lot of headaches :)
    Take Care, Mike :)

Ok Mike the image I have got but I shall be using a brand new drive for this install as the other machine I used the upgrade on a clone of a plain 7 install I didn't use the 7 install proper because I wanted to keep it simple and yep always use Macrium for most stuff like that

My programs and email I shall add later when I am really sure of what I am doing being so used to 7.

I wish I found this thread before I started!!!!

I have a laptop with preinstalled windows 8 home. I have a windows 8 pro pack key which I used to upgrade windows 8. I upgraded to windows 10 around the time of release and was successfully upgraded to win 10 pro. I bought a new msata ssd and thought it was time for a clean windows 10 install. No problems, downloaded the iso from the media creation tool, created my disk and went ahead with the new ssd installation.

I finish my endeavour to find that I am now using windows 10 home, the installer has plugged my bios key and used that for the install (Doh!).

Many, many hours later, after windows 10 will not accept my "Windows 8 Pro Pack Key", I have concluded that I need to (please, please someone say I have easier options.... )....

    1) Install windows 8.1 and upgrade with the pro pack
    2) Follow steps in this thread to create my GenuineTicket
    3) Clean install windows 10 and apply my ticket

Or, do I need to install windows 8.1, upgrade with pro pack. Let windows upgrade me to windows 10 pro. Then I follow this thread and do my clean install?

Hop this makes sense. It's such a pain in the ass that I can't just enter my damn "Pro Pack Key" into windows 10.... :/

And yes, this post is about as messed as my head atm. I just want to clean install win 10 pro. Any help would be muchas
