You can thank Shawn for the research he does as well as testing things out in preparation of guides like this one ahead of time to find out just what does work! And this one was certainly a must needed Plus Factor when discussing the problems people who were going to seeing with the MS requirement for upgrade type installs first which too often would simply turn out "Buggy" eeeeeee....!!!

This one in particular is going to continue to be one that helps a lot of people out in avoiding the bugs seen when something doesn't go right with the upgrade! Plus it will be an effective time saver for people on top of that. So you can look at this one as a "Win, Win situation"! :)

Shawn, I just did all the steps, except one, I installed a Windows 10 basic in Spanish, and the original installation was a Windows 8.1 with Bing in German (I bought this netbook in Berlin, its a Lenovo Yoga 300). Can be this the problem that windows doesn't activate? The error, it´s 0x803F7001. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello gandafmza, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Windows 8.1 with Bing can be upgraded to Windows 10 Home, but the different language is most likely why it's not activating.

Thanks for the welcome message and the quick answer! I'm now downloading Windows in Deutch language (hope this is german) but I only have 2 options with the windows 10 media creation tool, Windows 10 and Windows 10 N, I selected Windows 10, but this its not Basic I think. Thanks for your help

The Windows 10 ISO includes both the Home and Pro edition. The digital entitlement or entered product key is what determines which edition gets installed. If you skip entering the key during installation, you'll be able to select which edition to install.

That's when choosing the Custom not Upgrade option while booting live from the 10 media. The language is selected first before the 10 or 10 N which I doubt is what the German OEM install was. The N editions go out to the EU effected countries like Switzerland, Croatia, etc. while South Korea will see the KN for Korean peninsula applied there. Wikipedia has a reference for this seen at Windows 10 editions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As for clean installs as a general rule from previous versions into 10 you can't beat the option this guide offers to insure the best results. Yet the upgrade by update process from one 10 build to the newer even when missing a couple has been seeing some positive results.

On the two desktops here with a 10/7 dual boot going on each the VM on the 7 side and now the 10 host drive both on the second have just seen the smooth upgrade by update from the Threshold 3 to Insider Preview 14257 builds going on like it was simply just another update. That's a big change since that initial upgrademare I ran into last summer for sure! :)

Just installed Windows 10 in German, repeated the steps and Eureka! It's alive! Windows its activated! So, installing Windows with the same original language, it's a MUST! Thanks everybody for the help! This really does the trick! I cannot upgrade to Windows 10 before because the system doesn't have the right amount of space, so, this was really a lifesaver!

That's great! You do tend to have to match things up in that regard in order to see working results. But at least now you know for sure. When going to check for updates you should find the English language pack in among the 34 optional updates.

I think this one reason why many of us would rather go with larger OS drives as well as increase the volume of local storage capacities when possible in order to avoid cramped drives lacking room for various options. On a really compact drive like a small SSD you practically need to always start fresh with a fresh primary as well it would seem in order to have the drive space available.

Many years back it would have getting out of the old 500mb(proceeded by a 20mb on IBM 386 tank) into a 1.4gb drive followed by a 13gb later replaced by the first 120gb! on those old Legacy desktops! A clean install was the only option back in those days! At least at this time it can serve multiple purposes including "saving the day" such as seen there where drive space was unfortunately lacking.
