Hi,
I did finally get the original acer upgrade...... restored from a old system image and it activated since MS had the new key already
In case anyone is interested, I just did a clean install of Win 10 Pro on a Win 7 Ultimate machine that I wiped clean with this method (on a machine that had never been upgraded before) and it worked perfectly well! Thanks for the explanation!!!
Hello Shawn
Please could you say if it's possible to upgrade, using your tutorial, from
Windows 7 Pro 32-bit to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Also, are there any implications for Volume Licence product keys (MAK), rather than the more usual consumer version.
Thanks!
Hello John,
I'm afraid that it's not possible to switch from 32-bit to 64-bit without doing a clean install of the 64-bit Windows.

Some people have reported to still be able to upgrade for free to Windows 10 from Windows 7 with a retail key, but I don't believe you will be able to with a volume license. It won't hurt to try if you want to test upgrading to 32-bit Windows 10 Pro. If successfully activated, link the license for the PC to your Microsoft account, and you should then be able to clean install 64-bit Windows 10 Pro setting it up with your Microsoft account to have it activated.

Of course, be sure to back up anything you do not want to lose first to be safe.
Hello Shawn
Yes, thanks - I actually knew I need to do a clean install of Windows 10 Pro 64-bit! (I just forgot...)
It seems logical (to me!) to move to 64-bit everywhere now. Even Office has gone that way.
I shall try using our Windows 7 Pro Volume Licence key on this Win 10 Pro 64-bit installation to see what happens.
In the worst case, we will just have to buy some more VL product keys for our charity.
My aim would be to customise the first install on a PC, activate it with a VL product key, then back it up (image) [the Windows 7 backup/restore still works perfectly for this] then restore the image to subsequent PCs.
Would it be better to activate after the restore on each PC? Does it make any difference?
In all events, we will aim to avoid using a Microsoft account, since we use local accounts exclusively..
Nothing is ever straightforward, is it!
Thanks again
Since it's a volume license, it wouldn't make any difference. You would be able to have it activated before creating the image.
Personally, I find using Macrium Reflect for system images more reliable.
Please let us know how it went John. I hope it will allow you to use the W7 key for W10.
Thank you again!
I use Macrium Reflect at home - but it costs ££s, which a charity needs to avoid, if at all possible.
I will certainly tell you if we can activale Windows 10 Pro 64-bit with out Windows 7 Pro volume licence MAK key!
