Thanks! Yes - except it is Windows 8. It was upgrading to 8.1 that was the issue on this machine. So if I have Windows 8 activated, can I just run the Windows 10 install from my USB? Or do I still need 8.1 first?
Or - now I have Windows 10 on the usb, could I just do gatherosstate.exe method on the activated Windows 8 desktop and then clean install? And not need 8.1? Sorry if I'm going round in circles a bit!
Ok - Windows 8 installed and actived. I have the Windows 10 burned to usb on another machine. Got the gatherostage.exe copied onto desktop and run as administractor, file copied on a separate usb and am clean installing Windows 10 now. Only thing is at product key page there was no option to skip - just an option that said "I do not have a product key" so I clicked on that. Selected Windows 10 Pro, deleted old partitions and installed to all unused space, and it's installing now.
So as I didn't get the 'skip' option - should I just try and activate with my Windows 8 product key after installation? Or do the gatherosstate.exe?
Sounds like you are getting there. I'm not sure whether you can go straight from 8 (rather than 8.1) to 10 but I would have thought so.
My story is a bit similar. The PC in question was supplied with W7 pro, but I preferred W8.1 and so bought a copy and installed that. When I came to want to switch to W10 I quickly reinstalled W7 pro (no updates... just a quick install and activate). From there I clean installed W10 from the ISO and found it was already activated. Microsoft had already picked up the qualifying activation for W7 that I was using.
If by chance you did need W8.1 (rather than 8) to proceed then its still quick and free to update 8 to 8.1 and go from there.
You don't need Windows 8.1 or SP1 for Windows 7, if upgrading from an ISO file, DVD or USB Flash Drive. 8.1 or SP1 are only required to get the Windows 10 upgrade option to appear in Windows Update.
Thanks! After installation I followed the instructions to paste the gatherosstate.exe file into the File Explorer link and restarted. It wasn't shown as activated, so I restarted again and now it is activated. Great stuff, thank you.
So this was an Asus Eee PC 904HA (same motherboard as Eee PC 1000) with a new hard drive. Windows 7 runs on it but not particularly speedily. Did a clean install of Windows 8 with upgrade media - refreshing the install activated it. Windows 8 didn't accept 1024 x 600 resolution so rather than hack it and not be able to update to Windows 8.1 I installed Windows 10. Didn't do any Windows updates on Windows 8.
On a different computer, went to the Microsoft page for downloading Windows 10 and clicked on "Download Tool Now" (scroll down the page). Saved it and ran it and made a Windows 10 iso on a usb drive.
Installed the usb drive in the Windows 8 Eee PC - opened the contents of the usb drive and copied the file as recommended in this tutorial at the start, pasted it onto the Windows 8 desktop, right clicked and ran as administrator. Then copied the file that appeared on the desktop and pasted it onto another usb (not the Windows 10 usb). Turned off computer.
Following the instructions at the start of this thread, clean installed Windows 10 from usb, selected "I don't have a product key" during installation then used the gatherosstate.exe file to insert product number - restarted twice and it is activated on Windows 10 with correct screen resolution.
Glad it worked for you Hazel123! Just for information, the genuineticket.xml file can be saved on the Windows 10 installation USB flash drive - a person does not need a separate storage location for it.

Just thought I'd add how it worked for an Asus Eee PC 904HA or 1000 - much better than Windows 8 on this machine.
