How many of the steps in the tutorial am I supposed to take if I just want to lock in and claim my free copy of Windows 10, before the offer ends but do not actually want to use it anytime soon?

    Hello nco, :)

You don't actually lock in your free copy of Windows 10 until you actually upgrade or use this method to clean install to Windows 10 before the free offer deadline at the end of July 2016.

Don't want to use it anytime soon? If you are not looking to run 10 for the present time one solution would be to examine it via VM or Virtual Machine. You would use the Media Creation tool outlined in the Clean Install guide to not upgrade immediately or create usb media or burn to a blank dvd-r disk but save the "Windows.iso" file to a folder on one of your drives. The iso image can then used as the installation media when browsing to that location rather then selecting the D drive option if VM Workstation 12 Player(Latest free version with option to buy Pro license from VM ware), Oracle's Virtual Box. or some other virtualization option.

Here I think I would want to see the download for Threshold 3 or 4 if there isn't a 5 in iso form or be able to extract the esd file during the last few week of the free offer being in the Windows Insider Preview program that is. I t seems I can only get the 7 Pro desktop to connect by WiFi and not by Cat 5 or Cat 6 ethernet as 10 will readily to finally say good bye to that 7 install completely! The 10 Home VM however is activated and don't want to lose that however.

    @Brink

    Thanks!

I have mostly legacy hardware around me, but a couple of them, so VM is out of the question, but I can install it on any of the machines natively. I don't understand 100% what you wrote, but maybe enough for my purposes.

The bottom line: I want to wait for Windows 10 (besides the very serious privacy issues, which I care about and wait for an easy solution accepted and trusted by the majority) for the time I will not have to store my own, precious ISO for my hardware but when MS reaches to the conclusion it will offer a generic ISO with a trusted checksum shared by everyone and their dog and I can simply apply my own generated activation key to it, just like with all previous versions of Windows.

My understanding (which may be wrong) that Threshold 2 which was supposed to came out today but didn't would deliver just that. Or not.

Windows 10 market share is still under 15%, as far as I know, so Microsoft needs to offer some more sensible options in the not so distant future.

Well if your hardwares are too old you may run into the "Not compatible" type message when the 10 installer can't find any 8 or 8.1 in particular device drivers for board, chipset, video, sound. etc. That would be like trying to run 95 on one of the latest boards out! You know it just can't happen only in that case the OS being too old not the hardwares.

The 10 installed even set up the tv tuner card here with the automated process now seen rather you must have all driver sets downloaded to separate drive or removable media from support sites first as the recommendation. How old the cpus are can also effect running 10 on a VM if the cpu lacks support for virtualization like the old Celeron, Pentium III or IV or even any pre-Atholon 11 AMD models. Back 6-7yrs. ago is when you started seeing all new cpu models designed to support virtualization as the Virtual PC 2007 and later XP Mode can then be used.

The VM idea however allows you to run any number of OSs on the present Windows machine, hopefully the newest of the bunch, in order to see what 10 is first hand before planning any upgrade or trying to get 10 to go on something simply too old.

Can anyone tell me why gatherosstate.exe won't run on my computer?
It just says it can't run on this computer and to contact app author...
I did copy it to my Desktop, and I DID run as Administrator...

EDIT It turns out that the app was x64, I thought it would be x32, so I downloaded x32 and it did create the xml file. So, all is well...

One more thing: It activatedit without any issues, I didn't even have to bother with the XML file. I did follow your advice, I used the same edition and language, and it worked great! Thank you.

That would indicate MS is moved along further with the new "Digital entitlement" process as well as the latest build now accepting valid product keys. The fact that a clean install 10 following an upgrade install activates automatically in that alone shows MS is easing up in certain ways to get more people running 10. This option however still helps avoid the 75-80% risk of running into a buggy upgrade for sure!

I have done a clean installation just now but it didn't ask for Product key and it activated without copying/pasting the GenuineTicket.xml. I used the USB created with MCT:)
