Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10  

Thanks Brink for swift reply. No unfortunately W10 is rejecting the password I thought I knew for the only admin account. It was a standard but I changed it to admin . I was certain ( !) I knew the password which was very simple. W10 is now forcing me to open LAPTOP with the newly created account that for some mysterious reason replaced my Microsoft User Account with a Local Std. The new one was supposed to be a spare making it possible to avoid this sort of mess. I will have to clean install I know but meantime I cld do with the admin one working.

I am stymied at present as I cannot even use cmd with elevated privileges. The only hope is to get into the built in administrator isn`t it ?

I find I have an HP Recovery Partition on an external hard drive which I can access. Can I boot from that ? If so can you direct me to directions for a dummy as I don`t want to mess it up in case I can only try it once.

Unfortunately I could not find a Windows 10 Installation USB or disc though he was using W 10 on his old desktop I am pretty sure. My husband bought the laptop when he was already quite ill and I think it came with Windows 10 already installed.

What is the status of the computer now?

When it is booted what do you see?

Is the main problem the password?

What are the other problems?

Are there important files that need to be saved or are they already backed up?

Thankyou Zbook. I am going to try Brink`s suggestion of creating a bootable USB Drive first. Then I will try to explain the status quo. Probably in the morning as I am getting pretty fagged !

I cannot create a bootable flash drive because I cannot use the Media Creation Tool - it requires the admin password. I managed to save it to the desktop but cannot run it as it needs admin privileges. I cannot get past this. And I cannot create new User Accounts for the same reason.

I had better go to bed as I am getting so that I can`t see the wood for the trees..... Anyone got any more ideas I will be happy to try them but I fear I amd wasting everyone`s time and clean install is the only way forward.
