it actually didn't at all... ended up installing 7 (again!) after 10 failed to recognize the GenuineToken.xml file... Oddly, WU is still not functioning. When the WU service is running, the CPU goes to 100% and stays there until it overheats and shuts down. No updates ever get installed or even offered, but the service takes over 2gb of ram at times. This is a nightmare. lol. (mobile now, I'll post more later in a new thread probably)

Maybe look at Repair or Reinstall Windows Update
I have used the Fix It Tool 50202 (aggressive mode) - Option 2 in the tutorial - to fix WU a couple times. Once after I fragged WU trying to hide all the WinX Upgrade updates & once after I initiated a WinX upgrade but then decided to cancel.

Edit: 11/15/15 - sorry I should have suggested this link, instead:

Ran that, along with another FixIt, neither worked. They both find issue(s) and "fix" them, but WU still fails. Repeated runs of the tools keep finding and "fixing" the same errors. I'm using the MediaCreator tool now from a clean reinstall of 7 (where WU still won't work....) to just jump to 10 bypassing WU, but I'm at work and can't do anything more until later.

Update: did a clean install of W7, ran WU, and upgraded to W10 using the "standard" WU method. All is finally good.

Good man. Hopefully Windows 10 is the last upgrade & everyone can rest easy once it's installed. Or at least I will.

WMP will stay, it's WMC that walks the plank.
Yes, WMP will stay, but it won't play DVDs. I wish Microsoft would've kept that option in WMP like it had for Windows 7.

    So many choices...

Great tutorial as usual Shawn, but my first thought was that there are far too many options there, especially for us less techie types.

Anyway, after a few months without reliable internet we're now starting to look at upgrading, and wondering which way to go.

One laptop (on which the 'Get W10 offer was clicked) is now regularly getting the screen below (sorry it's at the bottom, I'm still having challenges importing files in this forum). No idea why this has started to appear; we don't believe W10 has downloaded yet. We've used your reg file fix to set UpdateOS to 'disable' and thought that would stop this appearing but it hasn't. Should we just go for it or would you recommend a different method to upgrade?

I was wondering about the 'mounting the iso' option as an alternative. Is there any real difference between this and using the Media Creation Tool? And if we choose the mounting method (on any machine) do we need to do anything about Secure Boot / UEFI options? These are mentioned in a 'warning' box in the tutorial, but if we're mounting an iso we're not booting from a USB right?

I don't want to do a clean install at this stage as I assume this wipes all 3rd party programs, and anyway the laptop had a clean install of W8.1 just a few months ago so is relatively uncluttered.

And good to see you're in Christmas mode already

    Hello Maggy, :)

Yeah, there are a lot of options to upgrade with. It really doesn't matter which option you use since the end results are the same.

I would still recommend to temporarily disable secure boot since the installation will restart to finish at boot. It's best to not chance it to interfere.
