    Yes, you can.

However, you could just download an official ISO at anytime from Microsoft now. :)

Yes, I know I can download the ISO, but I have a metered Internet access and I am trying to conserve data. Just the upgrade took over 3.6 Gbs of data. Hopefully I can do a clean install once Rufus finishes doing it's thing. Thanks for your help!!

    Awesome & thorough job Shawn

Have you noticed, during the Windows 10 setup, how they use purple on dark blue to "Hide" the stuff the Tin Foil Hat Brigade and other security conscious people, might really want to change?

If someone is color blind (In the United States 10 percent of men are color-blind, while only about 1 percent of women are) They're screwed. It's as bad as those installer wrappers from Download(dot)com
The entire process was kind of neat looking.

If you want to be able to activate your reserved free Windows 10 upgrade while doing a clean install on the PC in the future, then you will need to first upgrade using step 4 below from your activated Windows 7 or 8.1 PC.

If you do not, then Windows 10 will not be activated.
    Hi Shawn,

I'm wondering if I can also do an upgrade using Step 3 rather than Step 4 and still get the activation status?

The posts in this Twitter conversation by Gabe Aul and 'northfacehiker' (who seems to be a Microsoft support person and I've seen mentioned in Gabe's tweets before) suggest that an upgrade install from the ISO will activate, and I'm pretty sure I've seen similar behaviour when I installed an earlier Insider Build over Windows 8.1

In my case I'm on metered data so I'm hoping I can download an ISO once and use it to upgrade more than one PC to get activated status, then clean install later.

Do you think this would work?

    Hello David,

I was able to upgrade from 8.1 to 10 using the Media Creation Tool, and 10 was activated for me afterwards. It's worth a try, to see if it'll do the same for you.

    Hello Shawn,

    Thanks for that.

Sounds like it might work then.

(I'll do a backup of 8.1 first though, to be on the safe side in case I need to go back and start from 8.1 again.)

    Great post & tutorial Shawn.

I have a question regarding step 15, regarding the 'Change what to Keep' dialog box.

    Upgrade to Windows 10-23443d1436134419-windows-10-upgrade-installation-windows_10_upgrade-7.png

Can we go a bit in depth what happens when we choose any of the above 3 options?

I have a partition/2nd drive which my default windows users library points to (documents/pictures/videos/etc...). Say I choose the 'Nothing' option... what happens exactly? Are all the files also deleted from my 2nd drive or is just the primary hard drive [c:] cleaned out?

    Thank you for your time.
