The ISO route caused too much damage to four of my 3rd party programs.(all Microsoft stuff of course was perfect, what else?)
I was able to fix 3, but in my MSI Command Center, it won't show my RAMs SPD info or the current DRAM Timings, and seeing that Command Center is hot wired directly to the UEFI(BIOS), this is not a good development.
So this morning I reimage back to 2 days before the upgrade, updated Windows and a few 3rd party stuff, like GeForce drivers, 3DMark, and a couple of others, made a new system image.
Now I'm currently trying the Windows 10 Update Assistant, to see if it is gentler, on the system.
If not, I'll just reimage back, and wait till it comes through Windows Update, and hope that Microsoft and the 3rd party developers get the bugs worked out. I have Insider Preview in a Hyper-V virtual machine, so I'm not missing out on anything, and most of the new stuff, I don't use(yet...), for lack of appropriate hardware, like a VR headset![]()
Hi All,
Greets,
I am having a genuine 'Win 8 Single Language x64 edition' & I am planning to upgrade to latest Win 10. But.....
(i) I was going through the first post of this thread. It says upgrade is possible from Win 8 to Win 10 while the M$ Article says you can't directly upgrade from win 8 to win 10. First you have to upgrade to win 8.1.
Windows 10 Upgrade Paths
(ii) Which Win10 edition I can upgrade to for free ? I have Win 8 SL.
(iii) I heard that I can directly make a clean install of Win 10 by providing / filling win 8 retail key ? How the edition will be chosen than ? Which edition I should choose than ?
Let me know.
Thanks & Regards. ...
Hello Vineet,
If you have a Windows 10 key or license and don't want to keep anything, then you could directly clean install Windows 10 for the best results.
Since it sounds like you want to try to upgrade to Windows 10 for free from your Windows 8 SL, you would need to update to Windows 8.1 first, then do the upgrade install to Windows 10 using the same method in the tutorial below for upgrading from W7 to W10 for free. W10 will be the same Home edition and SL type as Windows 8 was.
Upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 for Free
Hello Sir,
Thanks for the Quick & Prompt response.

Hi Sir,
Please try to answer these questions :
1. This laptop came preinstalled with win 8 SL x64 but it did not come with a COA sticker like win 7 or earlier windows laptops. In earlier laptops, there used to be a COA sticker & a preinstalled OEM activation i.e. 1 + 1 = 2 Licenses. How it is applicable with newer preinstalled versions ?
2. If i follow the upgradation guide, What is going to happen to the win 8 license ? Would i be able to use this license elsewhere ?
Thanks & Regards. ...
Pardon me, Brink, but in the interest of time I offer these answers for Vineet:
1. Beginning with Windows 8 there is no longer a Product Key sticker on OEM computers, key is embedded in the BIOS/Motherboard and installation of Windows 10 will use that information to give you a Digital License.
2. The Windows 8 key is still tied to the computer it came on, can't be used on a different machine.
I've done a number of Upgrades since Windows 10 was released and it's always worked that way.
