    Hey Mike @magilla,

Unless it's a really old laptop, it most likely is already set for SATA/AHCI.
@Brink It is 2013 with latest bells and whistles for that date, has i7 intel processor and I just replaced the drive with a 1 TB Samsung. The Samsung Magician reports AHCI is deactivated. When I read through tutorial for changing settings via Regedit, the settings look like they are set for AHCI, so maybe the Samsung program doesn't read the settings correctly????

Odd. What do you show in your BIOS/UEFI settings?

Many Dell/HP etc laptops of that Era were setup as RAID , even though Raid wasn't used on a Single disk, single disks are usually just seen as Non-raid Members instead, but the RAID setting means many Apps can't "see" a single Drive, however Intel's RST Software should see it if that is the case.

RAID=AHCI AFAIK , so even if Magician or other APPs don't agree it should still be using the AHCI Driver , the Device ID in DM may give you more Info.

This Post at WinRaid may help Identify the Controller, see the two RH Columns

    Forum - Intel RST/RSTe Drivers (newest: v16.5.5.1040 WHQL/v5.5.0.1334 WHQL)

It is Odd that the Bios has no Options but then again a mass produced Laptop is something the manufacturers doesn't want to have to support cos some User corrupted the Drive by switching something in the Bios they shouldn't have :)

Uefi settings address boot order: os boot manager; internal cd/dvd drive; usb disk on key/usb hard disk; usb cd/dvd drive; network adapter. Secure boot enabled, legacy boot disabled ... bios is Insyde, version F.28. (No options for bios)

hp sets AHCI by default, long before 2013 (2007 if not mistaken) and does not give you any option to change it.
It's a common issue, with numerous posts in the hp support forum, that Samsung Magician reports that it's not enabled. Nothing to worry about. It is AHCI.

The question is, what do you show in Device Manager under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (or possibly storage controllers)? If it is using an AHCI driver, that's what you have. If an IDE driver is listed there, then that is what you have. That would be the definitive answer, IMHO.

    You're most welcome!

Just get a good driver (not the one proposed by Microsoft) from Fernando in the site @Kbird suggested and you're good to go!
