How to Change Operating System Name in Boot Options at Startup in Windows 10

If you have more than one operating system installed on your PC, then you will see a Choose an operation system (Windows Boot Manager) screen at startup with the name (description) of each installed OS on your PC listed.

This tutorial will show you how to change the name of an operating system listed on the Choose an operation system boot options screen at startup in Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to change the name of an operating system in boot options.

EXAMPLE: Operating system name on "Choose an operation system" at startup

    Here's How:

1 Open an elevated command prompt or a command prompt at boot.

2 Type bcdedit in the command prompt, and press Enter.

3 Under each Windows Boot Loader section, look for the OS description (ex: Windows 10) you want to change the name of, and make note of its identifier (ex: {current}). (see screenshot below)

4 Type the command below in the command prompt, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

bcdedit /set {identifier} description "new name"

Substitute identifier in the command above with the actual identifier (ex: {current}) from step 3 of the OS (ex: Windows 10) you want to rename.

Substitute new name in the command above with the description (ex: Windows 10 Pro) you want for the OS.

For example: bcdedit /set {current} description "Windows 10 Pro"

5 When finished, you can close the command prompt if you like.

    That's it,
    Shawn

    Hello,

I'm not sure I follow what you want to run??

The links in step 1 show you how to open either if that's what you meant.

I didn't understand whether to run cmd when turning on the PC or from the Windows environment.
I apologize for not knowing English.

    That's ok.

You can use either option in step 1. Just a choice.

OK thanks. Is this method functional in the reverse order?
I have Windows 11 installed and I would like a dual boot with Windows 10. Thanks for the reply
