Thanks Night Hawk I wasn't sure what would happen if I hooked up both the 10 and the dual boot SSD's but if I can then I shall and just set the BIOS to boot from either.. Shame Windows didn't put out a multi choice boot option on power up eh ie have Linux Ubuntu 10 8 and 7 all on different drives and you just chose what you wanted on boot up LOL!!
Hello Shawn I know I am a pain but I want to find out before I even try I have this main desktop (7 Home Premium) that has never had 10 on it nor did I sign it up for that free upgrade so have no activation code as such.
Can I put 10 on this machine as a dual boot and if so where do I get a code from or will I have to pay for one??
Hello Navy can you still do that though I thought we had to pay to do that or if I am mistaken are Microsoft still upgrading any 7 machine for free as I do have another desktop with 7 that I could dual boot as well it certainly would be very handy??

The free upgrade offer to Windows 10 has officially ended, but some are reporting that they are still able to.
If you like, you could give it a try and see. Just be prepared to restore Windows 7 if it won't upgrade to Windows 10 for free.
Oh blow it I just made the USB stick so I shall have to go back and start again which is a darn nuisance as my broadband connection is so out of whack at the moment I might have to leave any more downloading until the ISP techie arrives and sorts out the problem.
Though I suppose I could still go down the USB stick approach?? if so I have the 7 cloned to another drive in case of disasters.
Thanks Navy and Shawn anyway if need be I shall have to decide whether to stay in 7 or buy a key for 10 and have the machine just one OS pity because as I said it would be handy having that dual boot.

Yeah, I would recommend to create an image backup or clone of your Windows 7 to be safe. It'll make it easy to restore if you're not able to update to W10 for free.

Ok Navy now to make sure I have this right if I upgrade the 7 to 10 how do I go about using the partition I made for 10 to put 7 back in the drive?? I am only asking because doesn't the upgrade just go over the top of the 7 I am using?? I just don't want to completely muck it up.

If you successfully upgrade to W10 for free from W7, then you are not suppose to use the W7 key anymore until you have uninstalled W10. Otherwise, you'll need to purchase a separate product key (license) for either W7 or W10.
The free upgrade to W10 is a trade-in for W7.
