I'd recommend to temporarily disable Kaspersky first to help make sure it doesn't cause any conflicts.

I thought you were going to clean install Windows 10 to the drive for a dual boot after you have Windows 7 sorted?

7 and 10 on various machines

Ok Shawn I will disable Kaspersky for the time being.

Just so I am not misleading you I have two 500GB SSD drives lets call them A & B. Now the 7 I have it installed on the original drive (A) and have finally cloned the new drive (B) from it hence I have two copies of that install (the cloning took ages and why I said a long story) .
The original drive (A) I am taking out and replacing it with the cloned drive (B) because I have in the past had things go belly up and lost the original drive's stuff doing this sort of thing. I know it is an expensive way of doing it but if things do go horribly wrong I can always put back the original drive (A) and re- clone (B) again and retry what I am doing.

So what I was after was if I make a new partition on the cloned drive by reducing the C: partition with Partition Wizard making C: (therefore the 7 install) - 250GB in the first partition and it will leave unallocated space behind it also 250GB. So when I put the 10 ISO in using your steps can I pick that unallocated space to install the 10 to plus do I do this when the machine is already running Windows 7 or do I power up booting from the ISO DVD? I am pretty sure it is with the system up and running but just want to be absolutely sure

Sorry to make it sound complicated but it would be nice to get it right first time.

    Ok, I understand now.

You would want to create a primary or logical partition from the unallocated space first, then start Windows 10 setup from within Windows 7 and select the new partition to install Windows 10 to.

7 and 10 on various machines

Ok Shawn I have just tried the install but it went to an upgrade because in 'sources' there is no setup.exe so I picked the plain setup - Application.

I did the partition setup and left the second partition as unallocated fo the install so I have made that a primary partition now and in
7-ZIP the setup.exe is showing now in the source files. I am trying to extract that file to the desktop as per the other link at
4D but when I select the file and try and extract it it will not let me do anything with it. So I am pretty muddled up following the links and after playing with it all evening I might just give it another go tomorrow as I am sure I am making mistakes right now.

But have you any idea why I cannot extract that file to Desktop with 7-ZIP??

Odd, there should be a setup.exe file in the Sources folder.

7 and 10 on various machines

Hello Shawn mate tried again this am and success - must have been too tired last evening. Now when that activation screen came up I inserted the code that ShowKey gave and it rejected it but all the same it is downloading updates and working as per the clean install on the smaller drive I have with 10. So I am guessing the Microsoft servers have picked up that already.

I am now just trying to make sure al my drivers are up to date ie Blu tooth as the mice cannot be detected but so far so good and if this works out I shall put 10 in the work machine. Plus I still have to work out how to attach pics etc but at least it is good to see it on the large monitor.

Thanks for putting up with me yet again
    John

Hmm not going well on the work laptop mate have done a clean install on a 250GB spare drive of 7 Pro 64bit to just upgrade it to 10 so the activation code gets stuck into the machine but the install now into it's seventh hour is still not downloading updates. Have tried everything and I think I might call it a day and try a clean install again tomorrow.

But the dual boot is working fine although I would like to make it default to 7 instead of 10 if I don't choose within the allotted time to do so. But thanks again for all you have doen.

    John,

If you like, you could try doing a direct clean install of Windows 10 Pro, and enter your Windows 7 Pro key during installation to activate with.

Ok mate I left it running overnight and had the KB947821 using the update troubleshoot application (transferred by stick form the maim laptop) it has miraculously found and downloaded 220 updates so again by sheer luck I guess am now able to dual boot or should I just upgrade the dual boot?

Edit just re read your mate Shawn and I might just try the dual boot using the 7 code and see what happens so I don't have to upgrade and then reinstall 7 again - that would be a nightmare.
