    • Built-in native app in Windows 10 Pro, Education and Enterprise editions
    • Can run any operating system (Android, MacOSX (doable atlthough difficult to set up), any Linux distro, any DOS version, any Windows version, any Windoes Phone / Windows Mobile version, any Unix distro)
    • Dynamic RAM
    • Checkpoints, no other virtualization software has anything similar in full extent (simple example: start copying a large file, half way through notice you have to shutdown the host. In Hyper-V simply create a standard checkpoint, shut down the host, and when ready to continue boot the host and launch the vm; the file copy continues where it was when the checkpoint was created)
    • Automatic start / shutdown / pause (example: a Hyper-V vm is upgrading to next build of Windows 10 when you shut down the host. No problems, next time you boot the host and start the vm it continues the upgrade where it was cut off)
    • Totally integrated to Windows 10 host system

Just to name a few advantages...
    1. If I remember correctly, It violates Apple's EULA to install or run Mac OS X on non-apple hardware.

    2. Auto shutdown/start/pause is possible with vbox. You just need a script.

The rest isn't relevant to me.

No offense meant here by the way. I'm seriously NOT trying to troll or start some kind of bash fest. I am truly interested in the differences here. However, it looks like the differences are not worth the switch. It looks like the biggest, relevant advantages are dynamic ram, which I'm not worried about and direct hardware access, which I can do in vbox with pci passthrough.

I do thank everyone for their time. :)

I didn't say it's OK to run it, I just said it can be done. The list of guest operating systems possible to install on Hyper-V vm was a response to your invalid statements, correcting the facts:

I've noticed that vbox supports exponentially more guest OS's than Hyper-V, vbox is a cross platform solution (runs the exact same on Windows, Mac, and Linux). I assume Hyper-V is Windows only. Hyper-V seems to only support win7+ and on the Linux side, RedHat and Ubuntu.

In Hyper-V you need nothing additional. No scripts, no tools, nothing.

    Again, your question was:

I guess my root question is: What advantages is there to use Hyper-V over any other type 2 hypervisor?
You didn't tell which advantages you are not interest in hearing about, therefore I listed those that came first to my mind. Sounds that you asked your question prepared to only accept the answer "Nothing".

First, thanks for the tutorial and all the info.

Running Windows 10 as a client in a Hyper-V VM on Windows 10 Pro, the client connects to the network immediately but then immediately disconnects. The host is fine. Looking at the Network and Sharing Center one can see the the network is listed as public and unidentified, except every 20 seconds or so it flashes the proper network name and private but immediately returns to public and unidentified. The only error I can find running the troubleshooter is no ip address is assigned to the client, but I don't see how to add one. I have scanned all the comments and replies above, and read some closely, but don't see anything that seems to reference this situation.

Does anyone have any suggestions what to do? Thanks in advance.

First, if you are wondering I asked mods to move your post to this tutorial thread, the Hyper-V checkpoint tutorial was a wrong place for this issue.

    OK. Please post following screenshots:
    • On your host PC, open Network and Sharing Center, click Change adapter settings on the left pane, make a screenshot and post here
    • On your host PC, open Hyper-V Manager, open Virtual Switch manager, make a screenshot, post here
    • On your Hyper-V vm, get screenshot of the virtual network adapter's details and post here. In screenshot below you can see the part I'm asking highlighted:

In case you need instructions to make screenshots and how to post them:

Sorry about using the wrong thread.

The three screenshots you asked for: (This is new to me- if it should have been done differently please tell me.)

Sorry about the problem- I thought I was copying them. Presumably this time you will be able to see them. Thank you for your help.

Build 14316. Hyper-v Hypervisor greyed out.

Build 14316. Hyper-v Hypervisor greyed out.

I have Intel VT enabled in the UEFI BIOS.

    Any suggestions?

EDIT: Processor i5 4460 which has vt-x capabilities. However Intel Processor id utility says it doesn't.

    Hypervisor worked with previous builds

EDIT: When I disabled VT-x in the BIOS intel id utility shows processor is VT-x capabile. When I enable it ID utility says not VT-x capabile?!?!

I just got this invitation and I'm pretty sure it's meant to be shared! Thought y'all would really enjoy this one:

The Strategic Direction for VMware Customers

It's an invitation to a webcast on Hyper-V. Sheesh, I can't get rid of the underline, so just pretend it isn't there.
