I have followed all of these instructions -- THIS IS A RANT -- Not intending to pick on any one -- just my way of working out the problem. Windows 10 Host -- I am still trying to figure out why my windows 10 machine does not like to connect and stay connected to the network. I am by trade a Systems Administration IT guy. But I still run across problems that seem simple and most likely are. Normally I run VM's straight from Server 2012 Host and not from windows 10 -- the V-switch installs on the host / the V-Nic installs on the Guest (only in legacy mode) it works for a while then stops. (although the Icon says I have internet [I don't] ) it just cuts out -- I think it is some type of host problem but have not discovered the solution as of yet. Michael

    Hyper-V on Windows 10

As a Systems Administration IT Guy -- I normally Run VM off the server (Server 2012) -- But recently tried running from Windows 10 Pro -- It has been a mixed bag. I can get the VM Switch installed -- No problem -- Installing the NIC on the VM it self proved more complicated; I needed to install as Legacy for some reason. ===> So Now everything is working good. . . I thought so -- It disconnects at random and corrupts the TCP Stack and I have to un-install the VM Switch and Guest NIC before it will work again. . . I have done this many times trying to find the answers to why. Windows 10 Bug I think. . . also if your computer has more than one way to get to the network / Internet then I have discovered that ===> It doesn't like it at all -- When my system inadvertently switched from internet via the VM Switch -- To Internet via WiFi ==> Needless to say it freaked out and quit working -- going through the process again after disabling WiFi & Bluetooth Access. You need a legacy switch for virtual machines running Windows Vista or older Windows, or a bit older Linux guests. When using a legacy switch remember to remove to normal switch completely.

Guests running Windows 7 and later or any current version of any Linux distro do not need legacy switch.

As far as I know Hyper-V in Windows 10 has no bugs. Personally I have nor have I had any connectivity issues.

Again, as far as I know Windows 10 or Hyper-V have no issues in using multiple network adapters. For a Hyper-V vm, the external switch it is using must of course be connected for the vm to get Internet and network connection. For instance if you have only one external switch using the LAN (Ethernet) switch and that's what your virtual machines are using, they cannot connect to the network if you unplug the Ethernet cable from the host and connect it with the wireless connection.

In that case you should also have created an external switch using the wireless adapter, and edit the vm settings to let them use the wireless external switch.

Both LAN (Ethernet) and WLAN (wireless) external switches can always be connected at the same time. This screenshot from my host machine, both external switches connected:

You told you had to use a legacy network adapter and that the vm network connection keeps disconnecting. If your vm was / is Windows 7 SP1 or later, and if you have set up the Hyper-V correctly, you do not need a legacy network adapter, and the vm network works without disconnecting every now and then.

You told that you think it's a Windows 10 bug. It's not. Hyper-V has no known bugs and works extremely well when set up correctly.

You told your vm lost connection when the host switched from an external Ethernet switch to wireless. That is only logical, the vm can only connect if the external switch it is using is connected to the network and working. Nothing to do with Hyper-V.

Well, I had switched from LAN to WRLS, and now I've borked my setup. Not sure if you know how to get me out of this predicament @Kari? Can't get internet anymore on W7VM.

Please tell me have you already created a virtual switch using the wired Ethernet adapter, then removed it? I mean in another thread you wrote "I've totally borked this thing because I can't get internet anymore", which for me implies that you already had network connection on your vm but not anymore? If so, where is that virtual switch, I can only see one external switch in your screenshot, the onle that fails to be created.

Post a screenshot of your host network connections, the one like in my screenshot below:

Okay Kari, near as I can remember, here's what happened:
My computer was (and still is) in a temporary physical setup, using an Edimax wireless extender to grab my network signal and send it through an ethernet cable from the Edimax to the computer.

I followed your tutorial and set up a VM with W7 in December. Everything worked perfectly.

At one point in time, I noticed that my internet was very slow. During troubleshooting I found the computer was using the virtual adapter to connect. I thought this might be the problem, so I went into Device Manager and disabled it. Eventually, I decided that the problem was the Edimax extender. So, I removed it, and am now using a USB wireless adapter. (Unbeknownst to me, I later read on one of the the forums here, somewhere, that the host machine will use this virtual adapter, and that sometimes you can even have a faster connection with it.)

So today, Cliff suggested I get a W10 VM going to play around with themes and stuff. So, I went into Device Manager to enable the device, only to find it was already enabled. I started the W7 VM, and no internet.

Then I remembered that I am now using wireless, so I tried to create a new wireless adapter. In the process I think I messed up the wired one I had in there, because now it has a "1" on it, and it didn't before.

So, I'm pretty sure I did some major damage, and I may have to just nuke it all, but I don't want to do that and make things even worse.....so I have come to you - the expert!

That's the most common mistake made when users post about lost connection on vm, the reason I put this in a Note box in the tutorial (end of Part Three):

    Note   Note
When Hyper-V is enabled and one or more external virtual switches created, your host system uses these switches instead of host physical network adapters to connect to the network. This is as it should be, do not remove or disable the virtual switches!

One more question or rather a request before going to possible solutions: We need to check if a virtual switch is still in the system although not mentioned in your Virttual Switch Manager. Please run the cmdlet Get-VMSwitch in PowerShell and either post the screenshot of the results or tell exactly what virtual switches it found, switch types and adapters they are connected to. Example from my machine in screenshot.
