I had windows.old folder there after my win7 -> win 10 upgrade. I preferred to keep it. However, now the Windows.old folder is gone. How is that possible? I did NOT delete it. I definitely want it back with all its content. Immediately. What should I do?

    Hello Roman, :)

Did you run Disk Cleanup or some other program like CCleaner that may have deleted it?

Has it been 30 days since you upgraded to Windows 10?

If so, the previous OS for Windows.old gets deleted since you are no longer able to go back to it after 30 days.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, its more than 30 days since the upgrade. Thats probably the reason. The old working winhlp32.exe was located there (the w10 variant is just a stub that does not do anything meaninful). I wish I knew the windows.old folder is going to be deleted because I did not make a copy of winhlp32.exe.

Thank you! It worked, and this is what I need. How Microsoft thinks the users can live without legacy help system is beyond me. Thank again.

I tried all the suggestions and had no luck, tried IObit unlocker. which did the trick, I only had one file "INtcDAud" left after removing the all the others. saw it more as a challenge .

Problem is back now after TH2 upgrade, only file left is IntcDAud.sys. Which I think isnt that safe at all, when it's a link to a file in sysfolders?

Thanks, Brink, option three did the trick. I was getting crazy because option one didn't delete anything. With option two, I got a message that access was denied, even though I set folder permissions to current admin user. Option three worked fine; I rebooted and the Windows.old folder was gone, freeing up some good 2+ GB.

By the way, I downloaded the new Windows 10 10586 build ISO with Media Creation Toool and I will use it to upgrade without losing my personal files or installed programs. When the upgrade is done, will Windows.old folder show up again? If so, I'll just employ option three to delete it again. Thank you so much, Brink!
