I tried Option 2, and I got tired of waiting for the second command to display tens of thousands of error messages, so I closed the Command Prompt prematurely. Is it possible that that's what caused a lot of my Start Menu icons to vanish?

    Hello Greg,

Deleting the Windows.old folder would have no effect on the Start Menu. It only deletes the backup of the previous Windows version/build.

I have installed the update to build 1903 right now............ after i completely all "clean up" using the cleanmgr now i see a remain "Windows.old" folder. There's contain six folder and all folder it's empty and i thinks i can safely remove this folder.

I have tryed from "Explorer" but it's say somethigs like this path it's not anymore exist... strange.

I have tryed option one on first page...... on cleanmgr the "Previous installation" there's no appears...

I have tryed the "Command Prompt ways"... problably the problems it's my os language. It's ITALIAN.... the command prompt say:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32>takeown /F "C:\Windows.old" /A /R /D Y
ERRORE: Sintassi non valida. Il valore 'Y' non è consentito per l'opzione '/D'.
Digitare "TAKEOWN /?" per informazioni sull'utilizzo.
    How i can do ?

    *EDIT*
Problably resolve myself......... /D S........ "Si" instead "Yes"......... simply :)

I attempted to delete that Folder three times over the last several years and each time it ended up that the computer would not reboot. I tried (can't remember how) three different methods and it caused me great grief. Even though it showed zero contents, it wasn't pretty. I leave that thing alone now. Windows itself should have come along far enough by now to automatically remove the Folder as well as the contents.

Put yourself in C: directory. At an Admin Command prompt, copy/paste this, and enter. 99.999% of the time it will delete that.

    RD /Q /S windows.old

And it's that small percentage that put my system pads up three times back to back. I'm at the point where I'm paranoid to even hover my mouse over that Folder.
DjDiabolic, let us know if you use this command & how it goes for you.

I have edited my post.... i have successfully removed this folders but i need to change a little the commands of takeown.exe:
    I have to use "/D S" instead "/D Y" because my OS it's italian..... S = si :)
