Option 3 did the trick. I had to start the tablet and force it to shut down before it was fully booted to force an error at boot before I could get to command prompt. For my next trick I have a 5 pound hammer. ;-)

Why did MS do this, makes no sense????

    Great news.

The Windows.old folder is protected while in Windows 10 since it contains the previous version of Windows. This way you will have it if needed.

By default, the previous version of Windows will automatically be deleted after 10 days.

This folder has been on there for months. To use security to protect something like this would be fine, but to lock it up so you can't delete it is ridiculous.

This is the very reason I'm leaving this Folder alone. Everything at present shows zero contents but guaranteed, if I delete it, my system will not reboot. Whatever it is, Windows 10 does not appreciate one removing that thing. If it's one case in a thousand, it's still not worth it unless grief is something you'all enjoy.
Now I'm reading that the next major update is in all probability going to create another Windows.old. Super! Just Super!!!

O please permit me to chime in again. I've updated to 1803, used the Disk Cleanup which removed the old installation of Windows 10 (Fall Edition). But the Windows.old Folder is still there but I believe it's the one from last Fall, otherwise, there would be two Windows.old Folders. And the wonderful thing is, if I delete, remove, vapourize that Folder, this compute is not going to reboot. And there is absolutely zero that I can find out there that I can trust to remove that Folder.
I had this faint hope that Microsoft would have developed something to remove both those Folders but ...................................

I've tried everything from within windows to remove this folder but it will not budge - access denied. I may try the command prompt at boot method but for now I have a sollution . . . set folder to hidden

I wouldn't even waste time with options 1 and 2. Option 2 has never worked for me, only 1 and 3. When I type the 3rd command of option 2, cmd says access was denied. Option 1 works, however it takes too long and does not delete Windows.old folder, but does delete its content. Option 3 is the method I use nowadays to delete Windows.old folder, because it's the fastest and most reliable one.
