I think I will just skip this build and install next when sys prep works again. I don't recall so many new builds with the 7 preview.

I'll post here when (if) I found a working solution for this build.

BTW, your "move back to C in 9841:, upgrade to 9860, move back to X:" went well?

    Kari,

Does the relocate trick work with 9879? or is it a manual update as well?

No, it does not work in 9879. I have been testing it all the time trying to find the culprit, no luck yet.

Situation at the moment with 9879 is as told in this warning in the beginning of this tutorial:
    warning   Warning
Third Windows Technical Preview build, build 9879 was released today (12-NOV-2014). The sysprep method described in this tutorial has worked perfectly from Vista to W10TP build 9860 but this latest build seems to have issues with it. The method does not work, I have now tested past hours all possible scenarios.

I believe this is a temporary issue and will again be fixed in later builds. I also continue searching for a solution. In the mean time, please do not use this method!

For now you can use the registry editing method as told in this tutorial on our sister site the Seven Forums: User Profile - Change Default Location - Windows 7 Help Forums

I have tested the above registry method now with build 9879 and it works without issues.

    Help.

So i had not installed 9879, due to the sysprep method not working, I figured I would just wait for the next release.

This morning my PC wouldn't not boot. I tried everything under the sun, repair startup, etc. I couldn't do a refresh, because users were on D:. So I did a reset, which finally got me a windows desktop.

Now that I have a windows desktop back, I will have to reinstall everything. I created a user 'test' which I am currently logged in as. How can get windows to recognize the existing D:\Users as my user profile folder now? Can I use sysprep now that it is installed, and then create my 'Sheamus' user, and copy files over?

    @sheamus, a couple of questions:
    • The fresh, new Windows 10, is it a clean install Build 9860 or upgrade installed from Build 9841?
    • The Users folder from previous install, is it still on D: drive?
    • Have you already tried to Sysprep? If so, did you get any error messages?

Please be as exact as possible and tell what you did since you started the refresh process.

    Kari,

I hope you are taking a salary out of this site!

I hit F5 during boot, then chose 'reset'. Upon firstboot it was 9860, then it updated itself to 9879.

In my haste, I did not enter audit mode, as I was curious if I could even get to a Desktop. But I could easily redo the install going into Audit mode, if it makes a solution easier.

The old Users folder is still sitting on D, and of course the install created a new one on C.

I have not tried sysprep yet, as I wasn't sure what it would do the the old Users folder on D:\?

OK, so you have Build 9879 which as stated in the warning in the beginning of this tutorial means you cannot use the Sysprep method to relocate Users folder. You have, as far as I know, three options:

    1. Leave Users folder as it is, create the user profiles you need in C:\Users (PC Settings > Users and Accounts > Other users > Add a user) then copy user files from D:\Users\UserProfile to C:\Users\UserProfile to corresponding folders. For example copy D:\Users\Sheamus\Documents to C:\Users\Sheamus\Documents. In any case do not copy the Sheamus\AppData hidden system folder, doing so will copy old application settings to new installation and will cause issues later.
    2. Use this method to relocate C:\Users at least partially to D:\Users.
    3. Use this method to change the location of some user folders (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos) to D:\Users\Sheamus. Tutorial is on our sister site the Eight Forums but the same procedure applies to Windows 10.

I was about to do option 2... but, this morning the machine is giving me the 'Hard drive errors need to restart error again.' Restarting it started to repair disk, then threw an error, and rebooted. Essentially leaving the machine in the same non-bootable state as yesterday when this whol mess happened. The disk is a 1 month old Samsung SSD.... this time a repair worked, but has me wondering if I should just go back to 8.1 for now.

If I go back to 8.1 and use sysprep, how can I make use of my existing d:\users\sheamus? should I create sheamus before doing sysprep? Will the sysprep then acknowledge the existing d:\users\sheamus, or overwrite it? Or should I rename the d:\users\sheamus, then create sheamus, sysprep, and copy over it?

I would like to keep a lot of what is in appdate, as many programs store their settings in there, which is annoying to reconfigure everything.
