    My start menu isn't working after doing this. I used method 2.
    Before going to any possible solutions, could you please try to create a new local user account and check if the Start works for it. You can open the Settings app with keyboard shortcut Win + I (the letter i, not L) to create the user account.

    Hi Pwatt, welcome to the Ten Forums.

    Some questions:

    1. Which build are you using? The RTM build 10240, or later Insider builds 10525 or 10532?
    2. Did you install Windows without network connection as told in the beginning of the tutorial, only connecting to the network when in Audit Mode?
    3. Are you using a local account or an MS account?
    4. If you create a new user account after you have booted first time to desktop with your initial account, do the Start and Search work using those new accounts?

    Sorry for the late reply Kari, here are my responses:
    1-Build 10240
    2-I actually tried both with the same result
    3-Local
    4-The start menu does work on the other temp account. What I ended up doing was deleting and recreating my account and everything works again

    Nevermind, after further use of google for troubleshooting I figured out it did somethjng weird to my account. I just made a new one and transfered the files over and deleted the old one.

    Sysprep has a bug, I have reported it countless times. In Windows 10 it quite often disables Start and Search for any existing user account when it's run.

    Good to know you you got it fixed.

    Thanks very much for this guide - very clear and simple. I have just run option 2 which went very smoothly and all user folders were moved to D:\

    One problem I noticed though after the OOBE the OneDrive App closed immediately - all other apps were fine. This happened on existing users and new one created as part of the OOBE. Nothing was written to the event viewer log.

    The shortcut was at: D:\Users\Hali\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
    And the target was: D:\Users\Hali\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\OneDrive.exe (and OneDrive.exe existed in this place).

    Scouting around %appdata% in case something hadn't been updated I found this file D:\Users\Hali\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\Update\Update.xml
    Code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <root>
      <update minapplicable="16.0.0.0" maxapplicable="17.9.9999.9999" currentversion="17.3.5951.0827" rescan="1440" throttle="25">
        <binary url="https://oneclient.sfx.ms/Win/Prod/17.3.5951.0827/OneDriveSetup.exe" sha256hash="AihnAeYSqTTwn2gJ7+TpDd/30bDgXg33uU4wKR4avOo=" sha1hash="kOsFVdmRiH/4bj91Oe58OXetuWM=" />
      </update>
    </root>
    Going to the URL in IE and then running OneDriveSetup.exe fixed it. Not sure why it happened (OneDrive was not fully synchronized when I ran sysprep) but perhaps this will be useful to someone.

    edit: Works well with new user account, the redirect sends you to create a new account, and that is what works.

    thanks

    Thanks for the write-up. It works great. I am noticing one weird problem that might be related, but I'm not sure.

    I have a desktop and a laptop, and, for the desktop (which I moved the user folder using the sysprep method), I notice that my apps suspend when they are minimized (even the ones that I have allowed background access).

    The laptop, which also has Windows 10, does not have this problem. When you minimize the same music app that is on the desktop, it continues to play without suspending. I didn't try using the apps before I moved the user file, so I don't know if this is related or not, but I believe that Windows does save the metro apps in the user's folder (not 100% sure on this).

    Have you heard of problems like this resulting from the relocation?

    No, I have not had that issue. That being said, the new Windows Insider Build 10547 released last week does this on all systems, not only on those with relocated Users folder; it suspends apps when minimized or when you switch to another desktop. This is an issue in this Insider Build, not in the process used to relocate the Users.

    Not knowing which build you are using, if you are not on Insider program and not using this latest build then the issue is something else. I am sorry but I have no idea what it could be.

    Both the laptop (the one that works) and the desktop (the one that doesn't work) are build 10240.
