Move Users Folder Location in Windows 10  

Hi, so I’ve been doing this tutorial for some years now and I’m about to do a clean install as I upgrade to Windows 11.

From what I can see the process works exactly the same for Windows 11 but I wanted to try something different. Kari mentions to make sure that the drive I’m relocating the Users folder to is empty or at least has no previous Windows installation folders.

My question is if that is only valid for the root of the drive. Say I create a folder on the root called “old” and copy everything from the previous installation into it and then do the Users folder relocation. Would that be a problem?

I wanted to do that to save the hassle of copying stuff to another drive before formatting. I could just move the stuff I need from the “old” folder into the new Users folder and delete it afterwards, without requiring any copying.

Has anyone tried this before?

Has anyone done this with logitech G-hub installed? It seems to cause it to stuck on loading forever. (I checked to confirm that, when I don't do this it loads perfectly, but when I do this it only loads when fresh installed and then needs to be reinstalled after every restart).

I’ve had no problems with G-hub and a users folder in another drive.

If I got what you said right: It sounds like you can use the same "Users" drive. Just change "Users" to "Users_old", delete the new "Users" (make sure the username is the same as the old one) and rechange "Users_old" to "Users". I don't know if it will work with this method, but this is how I did it when I used junction method and even simply relocating specific folders (with right click > properties > etc..).

I am expecting issues with the following, and hope I can be pointed towards some resources or assistance about this.

I am moving from Intel to Ryzen under Windows 10 Pro, and I suspect that alone can be problematic, but adding to this is that my Users Folders have been moved to a dedicated SSD Drive according to Kari’s “Method 1” using sysprep etc some years ago (thanks for that, btw).

In an attempt to problem-solve well beyond my abilities I’ve looked at Kari’s “Method 2” for this so that I can first move the Users Folders BACK to the SSD containing the C Drive, but suspect that the tutorial (in relation to "Method 2", anyway) may be slightly out of date given two references made therin to steps contained in the main Installation Tutorial do not seem correct. An example of this is the reference in Step 3 of Method 2 (“OOBE Boot”) where there’s a reference to the “Installation Tutorial Step 19” – in this case, the reference to Step 19 does not seem correct, and it makes me wonder if the Method 2 notes are still up to date.

Can someone please clarify the current process for “Method 2”.

I suppose another question might be: is it even necessary to move the Users Folder in this way (back to the same drive as the Windows installation), or will installing a new MOMO and CPU Type go just as well without having to do this?

I followed all the steps but now it seems like the Users folder exists in both C and D drives. However, the C drive has only one user (the one without an email), but the one in D has this plus all other users. Can I delete the folder in C?

Hi Kari, I have used this for windows 10 and now done it for a windows 11, question though, if my D drive fails I am unable to logon the PC, is there away to have a user account on the C Drive and also D Drive, I have disconnected the D Drive and cannot figure out how to logon with an account using the C Drive. Thanks in Advance

Not sure if this applies, but when installing windows, I completely disconnect from the internet. That way, I can put a simple word/number login for Windows.

I did found what was the problem, the image that I was using where built with the wrong unattended format... not amd64 but wow64. After I've did a redo on that windows 10 image and did a fresh install I was able to do a second sysprep to relocate the Users folder, but I also needed to change a configuration inside the relocate xml file to wasPassProcessed="false" to it to work.
