The "Method One" section of the tutorial no longer mentions that wim-based image format is required. Does that mean that it no longer matters and this tutorial should work for images with install.esd in them?

    Oh, sorry. Found it:

"It has been mentioned several times in this tutorial that Windows install media is no longer needed for this process. "

The only viable and valid method is to backup your user data from D:\Users (docs, pics, videos, music and so on) and format D: drive when you have done the clean install and rebooted to Audit Mode.

Notice that you should not backup any system files and folders like for instance AppData folders in each user profile. Restoring AppData from old installation to new installation will cause problems, because both the machine GUID and user SID will be changed.

Hello Kari, I'm the bad guy here: Every time I reinstall W10 on C: I leave D: as it is ( Users + my own IS Data) and Relocated works well ! ..... But on every install I generate a new admin : SuperUser1, 2. 3, SuperUserx. and a new User: UnderUser1, 2, 3, UnderUserx So far : No problem (I did it 4 time in last 12 months) I made a "refresh" install with 1903 update, not even having to change a main setting.... (no reason given) Alain

Hi, this is a very helpful guide.
I want to ask a question,
Does the new Users folder necessarily need to be named ”Users” and be located on the root of a partition? Like will it work if I make the ProfileDirectory of the xml file for example ”D:\Stuff” or ”E:\Important\UserProfiles”?

I Just tried it. I set up my users folder to ”D:\Stuff”, and Windows created my account in ”D:\Stuff\Gummy". Everything works fine, no problems yet and hopefully will not be any.
I'm not as knowledgeable as you Kari about sysprep, but as far as my logic sees it, there should be the exact same effect as ”D:\Users”. This is because the original location of user profiles in the registry are all ”C:\Users”, therefore, ”D:\[CustomFolder]” is not any more or any less foreign than ”D:\Users”. In other words, all registries that would have been changed from ”C:\Users” to ”D:\Users” in the process would instead be changed to ”D:\[CustomFolder]”, and if there are any registries Windows forgets to change (you mentioned that there were a few) those would still be ”C:\Users” in either case.
Correct me if I am wrong though.

First, my apologies for a delayed reply.

I do all my installs to physical and virtual machines using MDT. For those readers not familiar with it, see the tutorial: Microsoft Deployment Toolkit - Easy and Fast Windows Deployment

Relocating Users folder in MDT deployment, create partitions in Task Sequence. On a single disk system set fixed size for Windows partition, put Recovery partition (also fixed size) directly after Windows partition, and last the partition for user profiles using 100% of remaining space:

On dual disk system, accept the defaults for disk 0:

… and on disk 1, create partition for user profiles using all space:

Before importing OS to MDT, mount your deployment image and apply the relocating answer file as told in this tutorial: Apply unattended answer file to Windows 10 install media

    That's it.

It is not possible to move individual folders with Sysprep. This method moves the whole Users folder.
