Move Users Folder Location in Windows 10

Thanks for developing this technique. It's ideal for those of us lucky enough to have configurations with SSD's. Just finished successfully moving User Profile to D: drive. C: is an 512 GB NVME SSD and D: is a 1 TB SATA SSD. The main problem I had was that WIN + X didn't work in the setup area. So I used Shift - F10 to get to command line, then DISKPART to configure the drives, partition, format, etc. This is a new hardware build (my first) so I had a system with nothing installed so multiple attempts were no problem. Now that User Profiles are moved I can start populating the moved folder. I'm running Win10 Pro, Version 1709, Build 16299.15
Thanks again for the great tool.

    Hi Kari,
I really would hope that you would find time to rewrite this tutorial with all necessary updates since it is quite old and we can see that all these posts are getting people more and more confused, especially notes added to original video that can not be seen while actually watching the video. The tutorial itself is great and one can also see that it is totally needed by the community and I'm also sure that it has helped so many people. BUT. Maybe it is time to do a clean start for this topic, would you think so? I really hope so.
I would need to do this myself and as non IT-pro, I find it a bit scary to start after 112 pages of post, updates etc.
Wishing you a very nice upcoming 100th independence day. Keep the white and blue flag high!

Thank you for this awesome method
However, after I did it I noticed that all my pinned stuff in the task bar have been disappeared (not a problem just wanted to mention it) ,but now onedrive is not working and I no longer see the usual sync icon on synced files and folders, any solution?
Also can you inform me of other things (if any) that could be broken/stopped working after the relocation?

Technically, nothing should be broken, but it sounds like you used the method for an already in place system, instead of a clean install?

Getting Sync Errors on Outlook 2016 with User Profile moved

I've been running with User Profile on D: for about a week. I'm getting sync errors on email accounts. I'm using Outlook 2016.
    Here's a sample:
    20:29:16 Synchronizer Version 16.0.8625.2055
    20:29:16 Synchronizing Mailbox 'xxxxxx@xxxxxxx.net'
20:29:16 Synchronizing server changes in folder 'Inbox'
    20:29:18 Error synchronizing folder
    20:29:18 [8004DF03-0-0-560]
    20:29:18 Canceled

All of the email accounts are IMAP. Any ideas about what's happening?

Hey, kblackw, and welcome to the forums.

I read your first post about your setup, and I will say this about your choice: Moving the \Users tree to a mechanical drive from the SSD will probably cause (unnoticeable) slowdown, because one of the main Temp folders, %temp% as referred to in the OS, is actually in your local folder in your user account folder - \Users\{youraccount}\Local\Temp - and when programs are running and need to use temp space space for whatever reason, they will be using the much slower mechanical HD for it rather than the much faster SSD. However, when I had a single SSD setup (Windows 7, but the methodology from this tutorial is very near the same), I, too, did the same as you - not for speed, so much so as to have an easy method to be able to restore settings, particularly browser and other program profiles, without fooling with the drive that the OS was installed on.

OK, so in reading your first post, my first question is: Did you perform a clean install when using the tutorial, or did you take your existing nearly clean profile and use the method 2 - move existing profile?

Second, in researching the error message, it seems that Outlook has a particularly bad history with IMAP accounts, and in particular, in trying to to synchronize (main) folders that have sub-folders in them.

Second, I'm assuming that you haven't changed anything in Outlook and these errors only started after you moved the \Users tree? Is this a clean install (wrt Outlook) or was Outlook already installed when you performed the \Users tree move?

In the meantime, I performed a Google search on the error message, and here is what I found as possible solutions:

What is Error 8004DF03-0-0-560 - Microsoft Community

Show all comments, then see the one from ADRIANIBANEZ - see if that helps.

Outlook Error 8004DF03-0-0-560 | Tiger Technologies Support

This explains the issue at hand, which in your case looks to be your INBOX folder. Their answer is to manually create the subfolders - but, if you're like me, you have hundreds of subfolders under INBOX, and that is not very practical....

Finally, there is [SOLVED] Outlook 2013 IMAP folders not populating - Spiceworks

the fix here is a bit different than the other two, but may actually end up working for you - the response by albertpaul.

If none of these work, please reply with the exact methodology you used when you first did this, and we'll go from there.

BTW, I'm sure Kari may have some ideas as well, so if you prefer to wait for him to reply, no worries.

Hey, JLG, thanks for your response. Let me try to answer your comments. So my setup is c: NVME SSD and D: is SATA SSD (note not HDD). Check my computer for more details.

For WIN10 setup, this is a clean install, using the first method described by Kari. Since it's a clean install, all apps (including Outlook) have been installed after the WIN10 install. In other words, both SSD's were 'clean' when I started the install.

I will look at the references you supplied regarding the sync errors and will report back here.
Thank you again for your comments - much appreciated.

@Kari - in the main tutorial page, the link for method one at the beginning doesn't actually go anywhere, whereas links for 2 and Upgrade go directly to the relevant sections.

I believe this is because the original tutorial didn't have the interspersed Video tutorial right after the ToC, so there probably was really no need to have it linking to the section heading that was literally right underneath.

Just thought I'd mention it in case you do want it linking directly....

Windows 10 1709 (Fall Creators Update) installation, using the Media Creation Tool, does not go to the "Get Going Fast" page where you need to press Ctrl+Shift+F3. It instead loads a Cortana voice command screen to "guide" you through the install. You can still press Ctrl+Shift+F3 on that new Cortana screen to follow this tutorial.
I searched back through replies posted since June 2017 but did not see any mention of this. My apologies if it was noted before.
