    Hello,

I'm going to share my experience on moving the Users folder on Windows 10 build 10240, coming from Windows 8.1.

Prior to upgrading, my machine was running Windows 8.1 Pro with the users directory in its default location (C:\Users). I backed up all my important files to a network drive, then proceeded with the usual upgrade process using an ISO created from the leaked 10240 ESD files. I chose the first option (keep my Windows settings, apps and files). The upgrade went smoothly.

After the first boot, I decided to start from a clean installation of Windows 10 by using the Reset feature (Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC). No problems yet.

Once the Reset has completed, I followed the tutorial, pressing Ctrl+Shift+F3 on the "Select language" screen. This successfully rebooted me to Audit mode. I followed the rest of the steps (create answer file, sysprep, etc), making one small change to the answer file included in the tutorial:

    Code:
    wim:E:\sources\install.wim#Windows 10 Pro
    instead of

    Code:
    wim:E:\sources\install.wim#Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview
After sysprepping and my PC rebooting to the "Select language" screen again, I set up my PC as usual, using my Microsoft account to set up my user account. However, after I booting into the Desktop, I could not open the Store. I was unable to figure out why this happened, and I was not able to find a fix.

I decided to do a true clean install instead by booting from USB and wiping the entire C: drive before installing Windows 10. Once the installation was complete, I followed the tutorial again (Audit mode, sysprep, etc) however, this time I opted to keep my PC disconnected from the internet (not sure if this is relevant). I also opted to create a local account instead of using my Microsoft account in setting up my PC (not sure if this is relevant also). Once I was able to boot into the Desktop that's when I connected to the internet and changed my local account to a Microsoft account. I checked the store and it was working.

Anyway, I have been using this configuration for about a week now, with no major problems so far. Majority of the Store apps and desktop apps I use function properly even when the Users directory is in a different drive. The only app I had a minor issue with was AMIDuOS, where it refused to create a virtual machine when the user folder is in D. I was able to easily fix this by creating a directory junction from C:\Users to D:\Users.

Hopefully this helps out someone. And thanks Kari for a great tutorial.

    Kari,
Just wanted to let you and everyone else know that I was able to upgrade from windows 8.1 pro, with user files on D:\ , to windows10 pro without any problems. Windows 10 just installed and when it was finished everything was just as it was before. I've been playing around with programs and apps and everything seems to be working fine.

It appears that there is not a need to move user files back to C:\ before upgrade.

Thanks for sharing, it is really good to hear and read about this from various users.

It is interesting that MS gave up and changed this; since days of Vista you have had to sysprep the Users folder back to C:, then upgrade, and finally sysprep Users back to where I want the folder to be located. Now suddenly, a few builds before the launch, I suddenly noticed that the upgrade went through with relocated Users.

    Nice :)

    Windows partly broken now?

    • My start menu barely works now, nothing comes up if I click the Windows button for the start menu. Only the Cortana search bar is working sort of.
    • My taskbar was totally empty, and some of my programs won't launch now or say they can't be found
    • Explorer takes forever to come up, along with any system settings, etc.
    • Things just seem way slower in general, besides apps that still work, like Chrome and Steam (for whatever reason)

What the heck happened?? The whole procedure went smoothly. I did have some programs, games, etc. installed on my SSD C: drive before I did this, but that's it. Those should still work shouldn't they??

I restarted, and it didn't help. Do I need to Reset Windows now?

    Please help, thanks

Thanks so much for posting this experience. I think a similar situation happened to me. I'm deciding to reinstall fresh again and use Audit mode. Thankfully I didn't install a ton of stuff yet. Just sucks it's my second day with Win 10 and I'm not totally setup yet.

Hopefully after this I'll be good to go.

So I'm getting this message now. I can't use Edge to get to this tutorial. Says it won't allow the use of Edge while in the administrator mode. So I double checked my manual typing of the XML code. It looks correct...

You can't use Edge in Audit Mode but nothing prevents you using the Internet Explorer. Right click the Start button, select Run and type iexplore.exe and click OK to open IE. For screenshots, type snippingtool in Run dialog and click OK.

That being said, you have a typo in your answer file.

That error is most definitely due to a typo in your answer file. I suggest you prepare the answer file before reinstalling Windows. Copy it over to a thumb drive or save it in the root of your D drive.
