hi !
thanks alot for the help
here is an imagur album containing all the different BIOS screens as well as the f11 boot menu
Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet
when I select UEFI usb key in the f11 boot menu it just reverts to the boot menu and when I set the UEFI USB as first boot priority and attempt to boot I enter a "NO boot media found" loop
I also used the "launch EFI shell from filesytem device.." option as well as the "Load UEFI defaults option" and tried a boot afterwards.
tatsu,
Do you have another USB flash drive to test with to see if their may be an issue with this one?

Hello, I have googled and read everything I need to know but I still don't know what to do.
My desktop was bought from 2007 and it's very old. So my mobo is D915GAV, and since I started experimenting since 2010, I never succeeded booting from usb without using 3rd party softwares. so this mobo has the option of Legacy mode and it is enabled. I never tried booting from usb again since last year.
Unfortunately, problem arised. When I was resetting my windows 10 pro, it failed then left me with no operating system. My priority options of clean installing again windows 10 is to:
1. Tried installing through usb by using my BIOS. (this windows reset was unexpected so my 3rd party software to boot from usb is not installed.
2. buy a new dvd rom. (my current dvd rom doesn't pop out).
3. go to a technician.
So I wanted to do no. 1 to avoid no.2 and 3 which is more expensive, hence why I came into this post and things about UEFI and BIOS.
SO my MAIN QUESTION is, should I install through UEFI or legacy? Take note that I already tried installing windows 7 before using the windows usb/dvd tool and still failed to boot from usb ( I needed to use plopbootmanager for usb to work).
I'm having thoughts about UEFI because my disk has 4 partitions and if I remember it right, I read some EFI when I was checking my disk management in windows 10. This 4 partitions happened when I brought the desktop to a technician and he installed a windows 7.
So, UEFI or BIOS? I may end up doing both because I really never booted using usb before w/o plopboot(3rd party software). but what should I do first. I'm using other laptop and I may still have more time before downloading windows10 because I cant install windows mediatool yet.
I hope you can respond as soon as possible. Thank you.
Unless you need the specific advantages of UEFI, then use whatever gets your USB flash drive to boot. The specific advantage of UEFI is that you can format your hard drive using GPT instead of MBR. GPT is useful if you have a larger than 2TB hard drive and/or you want more than 4 primary partitions. If you don't have a larger than 2TB hard drive and don't need more than 4 primary partitions, then the advantages of UEFI are minimal and you probably wouldn't notice the difference in day to day use.
If you are going to completely start over with this computer - the way to wipe everything off the hard drive and completely start from ground zero is once you get the computer booted from the USB flash drive - when you get the option for upgrade install or custom install, select custom install. Then you will get a list of all the partitions on the hard drive. Delete every partition on the hard drive that you want Windows to install to. That will erase everything on the hard drive. Then pick the unallocated space and NEXT (NOT new!) to let Windows setup create the partitions and install Windows 10.
