Windows 10 - Clean Install of my desktop computer - I used the Great tutorial that is available to all.

I did my Windows 10 Clean Install with UEFI yesterday, 4 October. I had upgraded to Win 10 about one month ago, and it appeared to be working well. I do like Windows 10 and will be keeping it so it was time to do a Clean Install to make a CLEAN one and learn more about it.

This Clean Install Tutorial on TenForums shows everything that needs to be done... so just do it. Thanks so much for having the great tutorial available for all to see and be able to do all the steps needed.

I appreciate all the efforts to make it and show all steps to make life a bit easier for first-time users. Thanks to all and maybe someday I will be able to help or work with someone to assist them in following the steps to make it happen.

I copied my downloads folder over to a backup area, and gathered up needed and programs before making an IMAGE file with Macrium Reflect Free (MRF). I also used MRF to make a bootable RESCUE DVD disk and checked it to see if it would actually boot.... I used Minitool 9.1 to check my Drive C: partitions, and used a 16GB USB chip to make a bootable USB file using the Microsoft insructions.... N

Now it is finally time to reboot and get the system to boot from the USB to start doing the Clean Install.... Yes, all is fine with my new Windows 10 system. I reloaded all the programs last night that I will be using from my Macrium Reflect FREE image data http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx file... and all are fine. Now my Win 10 system is only a total of about 18GB on my new 500GB SSD. I also saved a new Macrium Reflect Windows 10 Image data file named "Windows-10-Clean-install-4-Oct" in case I ever need to load it again. I am happy with it. Thanks to each of the TenForums users for many comments and a Special Thanks to "Word Man" for help and guidance/assistance/training with Windows 10.

Thanks for all who made the Great Tutorial files and movie to show what is supposed to happen.. You have made life easier for the rest of us. All be save... Thanks Cliff M.

    Hi Brink ,

I'd like to ask you something.

I'm currently using Linux Mint 17.2 with an AMD FX-8350 and my previous, old (from 2011) Gigabyte motherboard. All this is happening because I've sent my Intel processor for replacement, via the Warranty, and I am expecting my new processor to arrive tomorrow, hopefully.

I will install it on my ASRock Z97 OC Formula motherboard, in which I have had Windows 10 Pro installed and activated, with my previous processor.

Now, I have created a bootable USB stick using the Windows 10 Pro ISO I have saved on my external HDD. This ISO has been saved on my external HDD when I had initially installed Win 10 Pro on this ASRock mobo.

    Two questions:

    1) Does it matter, I mean is it "bad", that I have created my bootable USB drive using Linux Mint? I just right-clicked on the ISO and selected "Create bootable USB"

    2) Do you think that I will have any problem with the Activation?

    Thank you! :)

    Hello Joanne, :)

Q1) I don't use Linux, so I'm not as familiar with how it creates an ISO file to give a proper answer for it. Personally, I would recommend create the bootable USB in Windows to make sure it's compatible.

Q2) Since you only changed the CPU and not the motherboard, you shouldn't have an issue with activation. If you do, then you could contact Microsoft customer support to activate by phone.

    Nice Job!
I have an ACER V5-122P I was struggling to upgrade to Windows 10 from 8.1. I was not having any a lot of luck and decided to nuke and rebuild from scratch. This article filled in the gaps nicely.

    Okay, thank you Brink :)

For what it's worth, I'd like to say that the "bootable" USB thumb drive with the Win 10 Pro ISO, that I have created in Linux Mint 17.2, does not work under Windows. It was not recognized and Windows asked to format the drive in order to use it. I was lucky because I had the SSD with the previous Windows installation, untouched. So, I plugged it in, I booted into my previous Win installation, I created a bootable USB drive using Rufus, and finally I clean-installed my Windows 10 Pro.

Perhaps Linux has some other method to create a bootable Win USB drive.
Right-clicking on the ISO and selecting "Create bootable USB" though does not work.

    Thank you.

Okay guys, this is my last resort.

I've recently acquired a new laptop that had windows 8.1 by default but was ready to upgrade to windows 10. When I started it for the first time it was full of bloatware so I just decided to format and do a clean install. I'm not an expert by any means but I think doing a simple format and OS installation is a job I can handle. To sum it up, I've tried to install windows 10 but it crashes mid-installation. I've tried every single thing I can remember:

    • Booting in legacy/nonlegacy(?) mode.
    • Installing in an MBR drive
    • Installing on a GPT drive
    • Instead of using a bootable USB using a DVD

And so many more things I can't actually remember right now. The weird thing is I can install both windows 7 and 8 just fine, 8.1 and onwards just won't work. I've tried on another computer to see if the issue was with the ISO file but it works fine.

    Any help?

Hello techiesupport, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Here are a few things in the tutorial on the first page to make sure of:

    1. Temporarily disable secure boot and fast boot in your UEFI firmware settings until Windows is finished installing.

    2. Use a UEFI Windows 10 installation USB.

    3. During Windows setup at step 13, be sure to delete all partitions on the disk until it's "unallocated", then select the "unallocated" disk to install Windows on.
