Thanks for this article, fine when it works, which I reckon in many cases cases it won't. I've had major issues over the last week with "unable to create partition unable or locate" messages. The web seems lacking when it comes to resolving specific Win10 partition error advice.

I went through the diskpart steps, it was only after trialling a few Win8 BIOS steps that I finally got this to work. I couldn't even post the exact steps as I tried so many..

I was trying to do a clean install on an HP desktop install due to the constant BSOD errors running Win10 despite updating all my drivers, running Windows debugger, verifier etc etc. Previously I had to install over the top of Win7 (save nothing option). AHCI v's IDE off and on, disable / re-enable, legacy devices. Delete partition, format, delete, retry.

Smooth sailing as outlined above once your install gets passed the "create partition" issues.

Hello exasperated, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Usually you get the best results when you boot from your installation media to do a clean install, and then select an unallocated disk to install to.

Yep absolutely, I've been struggling to get it to recognise the an unallocated partition or partition, but finally managed it after many attempts. That is the good news.

The bad news, as I configure my desktop, is the bad pool header BSOD has occurred twice already, updated my Lan wi-fi and sound drivers (even though microsoft tells me there areno updates).

Although I like Win10, it seems so much faster, I'm coming to the conclusion it is rather unstable.

If you like, please create new threads for these separate issues, and hopefully we'll be able to help with them. :)

Windows 10 is pretty stable on my system, but of course that's going to depend on if everything you have is compatible with Windows 10 as well.

Here I simply put things to rest when it comes to wiping a drive to see a clean copy of the latest Windows go on without hesitation. For the most 10 now features the ability to locate and install most of the correct drivers without any fuss with a few exceptions only! The sound on the main case was immediate even while Creative lacked anything ready for 10 as usual.

For a discontinued PCI type tv tuner/video capture card I found out that the 8.1 update and app for a PCI Express model works well for 10! "Tricks of the Trade" you might say after years of looking up drivers for each version and the wait for when they finally come out at times. Not one BSOD however since the initial attempts for the first failed upgrade to succeed once the extras drives were unplugged where you only saw a split second blue flash until 10 was on not since.

The laptop as well as socond desktop not the first desktop however each saw some repartitioning when first simply adding 10 on after shrinking the 7 Pro primary which later saw the upgrade and then was nuked to move the new primay back and another clean install to correct the no boot problem that was then seen.

The laptop only allowing one drive needed a second backup partition more then the 3rd party wares and System Reserved 400mb and 300mb partitions and wouldn't see the OEM primary shrink any. Wipe drive clean for the next clean install without hesitation all going fine since. The fresh brand new primary for the fresh clean install of 10 of course was the winning formula to see a stable environment for the latest version.

When mentioning compatibility issues I have some things running on the 64bit 10 Pro you wouldn't even think would even install let alone run normal on the latest. Yet the 2014 version of the av program wouldn't even go on? Compatibility issues are generally for things that simply won't work. And why sometimes substitutions may be a solution. The two tv tuner card models for example must be seeing the same chip for the Media Center type app for one model work on for a non MC type.

After installing a clean copy of Win10, I was still experiencing BSOD errors, a couple in the first hour. I ran a driver util to get a list of all non-mircosoft drivers, and I noticed there were later drivers for my bluetooth USB wireless adapter and one other which I don't recall, that the update driver option didn't pick up. After updating these and still experiencing BSOD, so ran MS debugger on a whole lot of collected mini-dumps and noticed malwarebytes was a common denominator.

After removing the option "start with windows", my desktop has been stable for last 5 days, I will reserve this change in the next few days to see what happens.

And once you removed Malwarebytes you ended up with a stable OS! The version of that was obviously not compatible with 10 being a problem not so uncommonly seen with any new version when first out like 10 is now. For that program you would need to check on the availability of a newer updated version or select a new program that offers support for 10.

I just had to tell someone that their laptop doesn't see support for 10 since other newer models have pushed it back! If you run into any other issues you might have to do the thing as far as seeing drivers for 8, 8.1 installed in compatibility mode in order to keep 10 stable.

I also read in another post somewhere on here, that another user was having problems with Malwarebytes Pro, he wrote to the folks at Malware, and they gave him a removal/reinstall tool for Malwarebytes Pro. After using this option, his problems went away.
This is almost the same problems that I have had in the past with Windows 10. I didn't do a clean install. Didn't know that leaving your current AV and firewall installed, that is not windows but a 3rd party could mess up windows 10. Its not just Malwarebytes, but their are a few others ones too, like Nortons firewall. and even in some cases Avast, and I'm sure others brands too. Solution seems to be Before upgrading your OS to Windows 10, remove any AV and non Microsoft firewall THEN proceed with your upgrade. This seems to be the best method to use, then if you want to do the Clean Install later, go for it, and after clean install is successful reinstall whatever AV and firewall program you choose too.

This appears to be the case, downloaded from their site. Debugger references fwpkclnt.sys which does not entirely pin point the problem, but every mini-dump file references mwac.sys (malwarebytes), so I'm only guessing this is the issue, disabling "startup with windows" has resulted in my PC being stable.

Just wish to point out here, that on my laptop Malwarebytes and Win10 runs fine, suffice to say my desktop doesn't BSOD when MWB isn't loaded, so there must be some incompatibility somewhere.

My desktop was blue screening many times per hour, driving me nuts, hence the reason why I wanted to perform a clean (delete existing partitions) install. Reloaded my apps, and bang BSOD. mwas.sys was common in all mini-dump files, along with fwpkclnt.sys Bad Poll Header's.

    Clean installation doubts

    Hello everybody,

First of all, thank you very much for this forum which contains organised, complete and user-friendly indications on how to deal with the new Win10 (contrary to Microsoft website).

I have upgraded my new Asus laptop from Win8.1 to Win10 and would like to perform now a clean installation, but I have some doubts:

    1) For the clean installation, can I use a Windows 10 installation USB with same version, architecture but different language with respect to the activated windows 10 already installed? I ask this because it is stressed everywhere the 2 versions must be the same, but poor and ambiguous information can be found on the installation language.

    2) On step 13 of this tutorial it is written how to deal with partitions when installing with UEFI. But in that way, it is not possible to create a partition for data storage, which I would really like to have. I know there is a strict partitions order to respect and that the data storage partition should be the last one, after the optional recovery image partition. Could you please give me some guidance through the process of creating a data storage partition and setting its size? Also, if I don't set a recovery image partition, is the data storage unit just after the windows partition? (Maybe it is obvious but always better to ask)

    3) Btw, do you experts insert the recovery image partitions too? Why yes/Why no?

Thank you very much in advance!!!
    Ale
