    Hello,

I wanted to do a clean install of Windows 10 on my pc but seems I can't. Probably can, but I am stuck. No I am not an expert, far from an expert actually, and I am not English, but doing my best to understand everything in English
I created a USB with the Media Creation Tool. I boot my pc with it. No problem so far.
But then after step 10 in the tutorial I get this message:
"Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only installed on GPT disks." ( I had to translate that as I get it in Dutch of course)
This pc originally had Windows 8, then upgrade to 8.1 and now I upgraded to Windows 10. Never really had any problems. But I would like to make a fresh clean start now with Windows 10 and also remove the recovery partition. I thought using this tutorial that would now be possible in an easy way for me. But like I said I am stuck now.
Do I need to create a different kind of USB or anything else I have to do? I have no idea, sorry
Luckily I managed to stop the installation and the pc still works
Any help how to proceed is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hello Jurien, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Are you able to do step 12 to delete all partitions on the disk until is "unallocated"?

Hello Brink and thank you :)

I can see the 3 partitions on my disk ( a Samsung SSD by the way). And my second hard drive.
And about the same options as in the picture right under " D) Go to step 14 below" in the tutorial.
So the answer is probably yes, but I was afraid to do that. No way of going back of course after I do that. If you know what I mean.

    I hear you.

If the second hard drive is just a data drive, then I would recommend to disconnect it first to make sure nothing happens to it by mistake. You can connect it back after Windows has finished installing on the SSD.

This way you only have the SSD connected to install Windows on after deleting all partitions until unallocated.

That's already going to be complicated for me, disconnect that second hard drive, sorry never done anything like that.
But basically you are saying despite that I get that message " Windows cannot be installed on this disk etc. etc." , I have to select each partition on that drive ( Drive 0 it is called if I remember correct, not sure how the partitions are called, think one is called Windows, one Recovery and one I don't know) and then delete them one by one?

You can unplug the data or power cable from the HDD to disconnect it. No need to turn off the computer since SATA is hot swappable.

This way you don't have to worry about deleting the partitions on the wrong drive by mistake. That'll ruin your day.

That's correct. Each partition on the same disk will have that to delete them each one by one until you only have one unallocated "Disk 0" partition left to select to install Windows on.

Will try to disconnect the second hard drive tomorrow, getting a bit late here now. Have to open up my pc first and hope I can find it
And after that delete each partition and hope for the best haha
So it is that easy then after all?
Of course I ''googled" with that same message I got, but al kinds of, for me, complicated things to do before I can install Windows.

Yep, it's that easy. If you have any questions tomorrow, please feel free to ask. :)

Just be sure to back up anything that you do not want to lose to be safe though.

For me that 'MBR' and 'GPT' , EFI and such, are confusing and no clue what to do then. But if it is that easy, well that is a bonus :)
I have everything backed up. Wanted to make a fresh start.
Thank you very much for your help :)

    You're most welcome. :)

When you select an "unallocated" disk to install to, you no longer have to worry about what type of partitions are on it. Windows Setup will take care of it using this option. That's why I like it so much. It's a lot easier.
