Hello Shawn I just swapped out the original hard drive and installed from a USB stick after making it from the media creation tool tutorial.
Now all went well but I didn't get that activation screen it just installed 10 I thought at first maybe something in the BIOS had automatically activated it but it obviously has not because I cannot Personalize the screen until I have activated it.
I have tried going to Settings and do what I can in there but it does not give me a screen that I can use for activation.
Any ideas mate as I am stuck now with a machine that will boot to Windows and update and all but as I said I cannot access Personalization for example.

    Hello John,

Microsoft activation servers are having issues off and on right now. They should be back to normal within a day or two, but you could try the Activation troubleshooter.

Shawn, this needs to be redone for 1803/1809. If you use a Microsoft account you must enter a PIN, no way around it. Ran in to this tonight. I normally use a Local account first then setup a MS account after the install. This time I used a MS account right away and the wording on the window said You must set up a PIN.

Not a big deal but frustrating. I used your tutorial (of course) to remove the pin as soon as the install completed.

    Thank you Rich.

I will do a clean install in a VM tomorrow now to get some updated screenshots for this, and then update the tutorial for it.

Wow, that was fast. There is a lot of stuff in the tutorial I've never seen, like near the end where there were all the additional security questions.

The one thing I would like to see added around step 10 G I think, is a note that if using a Microsoft Account you have to enter a pin, there is no way to bypass that step but you can remove it later if you want. The only way to avoid it I've found is to use a Local account first then create the Microsoft Account after the initial install.

Thanks for this and all the great tutorials you do. They sure make my life easier.

Some have asked if there's any way to skip providing three security questions when setting up with a local account. They feel it weakens security by providing a 'back door' as the answers may be easy to guess.

If you use a blank password initially you don't get asked to set up the security questions. You can then set the password once you have signed in for the first time.

Main reason why i use a MS account during a fresh install. I don't even use a dang password on my computers. Noone is here except me anyway. When my girlfriends come over, they get on my computer, but I have nothing to hide.

    Hi all,

Can I please confirm that for step 13 users cannot avoid having multiple partitions as in step 12? I find this very annoying as I use Symantec Ghost to backup my c drives. With Ghost, only two partitions show instead of 4. So ghosting the whole disk seems to be the only solution. However, the laptop I currently use has only one drive.

If this is the case can you please add something to step 13 to say that ‘single partition is NOT possible for UEFI installation. Thx for the great tutorial.

A suggestion. I am not familiar with Ghost, so I cannot comment on how it shows partitions, it may not show "un-lettered" partitions, such as Reserved. Download and run an excellent partition manager, MiniTool Partition Wizard, that is used here by many and trusted, and FREE. It will show you the true picture of what you have now. You may then be able to answer your own question. Give it a try. It's free, and well worth keeping.
