Reset Folder View Settings to Default in Windows 10

Option 1 basically just clears all custom folder views to reset them back to default. The desktop uses Auto arrange icons (off) and Align to grid (on) by default.

Is it allowing you to arrange the icons how you want while running Windows, and resetting on sign out/in or restart each time?

There have been many reports of Windows not remembering the desktop icon layout after a sign out/in or restart, but it's not related to resetting the folder views using the method in this tutorial. So far, most people have been using 3rd party software to keep their desktop settings remembered (backed up).

You might also try this below to see if it may fix it for you:

This does require taking ownership of the InProcServer32 key at both locations before being able to change the (Default) value if needed to be changed.

In regedit go to those 2 destinations

and
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{42aedc87-2188-41fd-b9a3-0c966feabec1}\InProcServer32\

Double click on (Default) and replace "%SystemRoot%\SysWow64\shell32.dll" with "%SystemRoot%\system32\windows.storage.dll" in both file destinations then restart your PC and everything should work fine !!

No desktop sorting or alignment options are set. I've reset them where they were using DesktopOK but they all shift left again after logging out / in. Looks like there is a strange issue I'll have to recover from my Reflect backup luckily made 2 hours ago.

Just as test and for reference, what does it show in the registry settings above for you? The default should be %SystemRoot%\system32\windows.storage.dll.

All as expected.

I just recovered foro today's Reflect backup in 7 minutes so I'm back to where I was before I started fiddling with folders.

I've now set two types of folder view - 'General' is set to small icons and 'Docs' is set to medium icons. All desktop folders are now set to one of these (or photos / videos / music for media folders). I wish Windows had a way of just remembering each folder as it was last left configured.

I have searched everywhere. Just wondering is there a cmd or reg to make Libraries' Doc , Music, Pictures, Videos to optimized for General items ?

Hello illusion,

Unfortunately, this does not get applied to libraries.

Libraries still need to be manually set, but what you set gets applied to all folders in the library though.

There's probably some clever way to do that but I just set all folders and libraries in Explorer to "General Items" and if i need per folder view settings I browse via a third party portable file explorer (with a lot of addons) which is not exactly straightforward to configure.
