How to Add or Remove Sharing tab in Folder Properties in Windows

The Sharing tab in the properties of a folder or drive allows you to manage file sharing over a network in Windows to share files and folders on your computer with other users over a private or public network in your workgroup or domain.

To open the Sharing tab, you can right click or press and hold on a folder or drive, click/tap on Properties, and click/tap on the Sharing tab.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Sharing tab in drive and folder properties for all users in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to add and remove the Sharing tab in drive and folder properties.

The Sharing tab requires the Server (LanmanServer) service to be enabled, running, and set to Automatic.

    This is the default setting.

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

    Add_Sharing_tab_in_folder_properties.reg

    Download

(Contents of .reg file for reference)
    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\Sharing]
    @="{f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6}"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\Sharing]
    @="{f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6}"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Blocked]
    "{f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6}"=-

3 To Remove "Sharing" tab in drive and folder properties

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\Sharing]

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 You could now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

    That's it,
    Shawn Brink

    @ Brink
I have the registry entries you suggest already present in my registry, but no Share tab in new folder Properties. I have one shared folder already on this machine, but I recall having to set up the sharing through the Security tab a year or two ago. Now I want to set up another shared folder for easy home network file trading, and would really like to have the Sharing tab. Any ideas?
(N.B.: This is not top priority, so if you're too busy with more important matters to get around to this in the next decade, I will understand completely.)

    Hello @Wisewiz,

Double check to make sure the Server service is enabled and set to "Automatic" and running.

    Is the "Sharing" tab back?

No. Sorry, I wasn't clear: I meant that I checked and found that the Server service was already all that stuff.

Odd. Check the registry location below to make sure you do not have {f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6} listed as a value indicating it is being blocked. If you do, delete the {f81e9010-6ea4-11ce-a7ff-00aa003ca9f6} value.

    @ Brink

It was blocked. Previous owner no doubt. Corporate machine formerly.
    Deleted, and Sharing is baaaack!

Thank you so very much, Shawn.

    Great news Dan.

Our posts will serve as a footnote, but I will include it in the .reg file now.

    Hello @Brink,

Just a note to say that I had to perform a Restart for the Sharing Tab to show up in the Properties after changing the Server (LanmanServer) Service to be ENABLED, RUNNING, and set to AUTOMATIC.
