How to Enable or Disable Install Google Chrome Themes in Microsoft Edge Chromium

The flag used in this tutorial is no longer available in Edge.

Microsoft has adopted the Chromium open source project in the development of Microsoft Edge on the desktop to create better web compatibility. This new Microsoft Edge runs on the same Chromium web engine as the Google Chrome browser, offering you best in class web compatibility and performance.

The new Chromium based Microsoft Edge is supported on all versions of Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10, Windows Server (2016 and above), Windows Server (2008 R2 to 2012 R2), and macOS.

If you like, you can enable the Allow installation of external store themes experimental flag in Microsoft Edge to allow themes from external web stores like the Chrome Web Store to be installed in Microsoft Edge.

You can personalize Microsoft Edge with any custom theme you want from the Chrome Web Store. The theme appears around the border of the browser and as the background when you open a new tab.

This tutorial will show you how to enable or disable allowing installing Google Chrome themes from the Chrome Web Store to the Chromium based Microsoft Edge.

EXAMPLE: Google Chrome themes allowed from Chrome Web Store in Microsoft Edge

    Here's How:

    1 Open Microsoft Edge.

2 Copy and paste edge://flags/#edge-allow-store-extension-themes into the address bar, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

3 Select Default (same as Disabled), Enabled, or Disabled in the Allow installation of external store themes drop menu for what you want, and click/tap on Restart to apply.

4 When finished, you can close the Experiments tab if you like.

    That's it,

    Hi @Brink

I have installed multi "Chrome" themes and "Microsoft Edge" native themes on my latest stable version (Edge v88.0.705.56). How can I uninstall them?!

There is no theme section in "Settings". I have removed one theme that appeared in "Settings>Appearance". I know the others (themes) are hidden somewhere! As I realized they are hidden in "AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default" but I don't know where exactly they are and how to uninstall them!

    Hey mate,

You should be able to use option 2 below to remove a theme in Microsoft Edge.

Didn't work! BTW I ruined my "Preferences" file in Edge's default user profile folder!! … I reset my "Preferences".

Is "WindowsQ" a new "Windows" forum? I didn't meet it before you mention above! My apologies for irrelevant question.

    Oops on the reset.

Did you have a Remove option available for the theme?

Usually, when you change the theme in Microsoft Edge, it will replace and remove the previous one by default. I'm not sure yet if the theme is kept saved anywhere though.

Correct. Windows Questions is a new site we're working on.

… There is a file next to the original one (Preferences) in "AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default" with "bad" extension (Preferences.bad). As I realized (by checking the file date and time modification) it's the old one that Edge has archived. Is that safe to remove it?

Yes and I have removed just one theme which was available there (but I had installed multi themes from Chrome and Microsoft Edge extension page)

I thought the Edge will remove the previous theme by installing new theme but when I go to a specific Chrome theme page (that I installed it), a yellow bar notification on top of the page says "Your theme is disabled! Enable it by click here" and when I click on, it enable again (previously installed Chrome theme)!

I haven't seen a way to fully uninstall a theme yet, only remove (aka: disable) them.

Great. See you over at Windows Questions .

    Hello mate,

People preferred individual sites per Windows instead, so we took it offline.

We're also over at the site below now:
