That could be the problem but I can't remember which version I chose! Can I tell which version I have from the files on the ISO image? Is there the same choice for the Media Creation Tool? If so, it seems I downloaded the right option for that.

I don't use MCT so I don't know, what is the filename of the ISO you downloaded? If it's Win10_1511_English_x64.iso, that's the US English version. You're in the UK and use the UK English version which should be called Win10_1511_EnglishInternational_x64.iso.

Yes, I have Win10_1511_English_x64.iso so that's the wrong version for me despite being English! Would this ISO have screwed up the Windows activation had I used it?

UK users note you need Win10_1511_EnglishInternational_x64.iso.

Nar, but the repair install would have most likely just failed and reverted back to where you are now since the ISO wasn't the same as what you currently have installed.

I've downloaded a (nearly) fitting iso of windows 10 pro, but it is "Windows 10 Pro Technical Preview 10.0.10586". My system states "Microsoft Windows 10 Pro 10.0.10586". Can I use this for a repair install? I guess not, but I would like to be sure.

Unfortunately Media Creation Tool delivers a wrong version.

Presumably you downloaded the correct language and edition? It will by default unless you changed it.

The Media Creation Tool (and Tech Bench) ISO do have the description "Technical Preview" but this is nothing to worry about at all and you certainly can use it for repair install.

Thank you for your fast reply. I've downloaded the correction language, so it should be fine for repair install *happy*
I don't need it at the moment, but in case ... I would like to have a repair-stick.

It certainly is useful to have, yes :)

It should work fine until the next change of build (in March perhaps if MS stick to 4 month intervals but who knows). Then you'll need to download the new version after you upgrade. In the same way you couldn't use a 10240 ISO to repair install a 10586 install at the moment.

    See this post:

Instead of mounting the ISO, though, just have the USB stick inserted and point the DISM command to it instead of the mounted ISO file.
