Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade  

Ugh, my apps decided to die

only way to fix it is apparently to reinstall windows

and this wont work because it greys out the options, and i tried everything

Thank you Brink for this; but each time I do an in-place upgrade somethings doesn't work well, for example 10586.0 WoW64 died, 10586.11 User Profile dies, 10586.14 WinPE and Fast Startup are dying. What should I do? If there is nothing to do, I would not recommend doing in-place upgrades (each time there will be a new problem) and do instead clean installs

Use the Contact Support app on your all apps menu. I have done many in-place-upgrades and never had any of the issues you describe. But my wife has done in-place-upgrades and has had various things go wrong. Her problem was that she kept re-importing her User Profile. She was re-importing the problems and only when she started fresh and only imported files she needed, rather than her old user folder complete, did she resolve it.

Did you replace your User Profile or did you re-import the whole user folder from back-up? How did you handle that?

I deleted several times my user profile. I have performed a repair upgrade, and first WinRE was unusable (fixed), second hiberboot/hybrid boot wasn't working since I upgraded to 10586.29

I agree. That's the only way I was able to completely get rid of a corrupted user profile. And then don't drag and drop the User folders from backup. Copy only needed folders. My profile had 37,000+ files in it and some of it must have been corrupted data. This was the way I got a completely clean copy of Windows.

I'm facing a problem and I would REALLY appreciate your help with this.
My PC kinda collapsed by itself. (probably because of an update or something) and slowly but surely all of Windows' apps started failing. It started with the Photos app, then store, then edge and so on and so forth.
Well, after trying everything under the sun to "fix it" (using the powershell commands to reinstall apps, uninstalling them etc) and not getting anywhere I tried to do a system restore. TO my dismay there were NO restore points. I don't know how or why but somehow System Restore was OFF (And no, I didn't turn it off)
Anyway, after literally exhausting every other option under the sun I came to the conclusion that I needed to do a repair install. So I grabbed the media creation tool, made the USB and started the process. Well, that's what brought me here. I'm getting this error:
"You can't keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps because your current version of Windows might be installed in an unsupported directory."
And I haven't changed ANY directories at all (only the downloads folder, but I even tried restoring it back to default and no go.
Is there ANY WAY for me to be able to repair my damn PC? Or am I SOL and need to do a clean install. (which I won't anytime soon cause I can't take another round of installing programs and configuring them to my liking.)
Please, help a fellow geek

I had that happen, the only way i could fix it was with a restore point... you can run the "reset this PC"

but you will still need to reinstall apps and programs

NOOOOOOOOOOO.... Please don't say that!
I honestly have no idea what could've made such a mess.
I mean, Apps failing I get it. It's MICROSOFT after all but Restore Points turning off by themselves? (No I don't have any malware or virus AFAIK)
Have you experienced that as well?
