Thank you for replying but I get the same answer to this install as to the others I've tried today: "This update can't be applied to this computer."
Does the answer means that I already have the update, although I can't see it, or does it mean that I don't need it?

I looked and it is in my update history, so if you have it, it will show up in your list of updates installed

You really should fill in your computer spec's much better for one thing, its helps people on here to help you.
What version of Windows are you on? Type "winver" in your Run choice.
If you are running build 19041.661 Then Windows won't install the newer update. Its a bug in Windows.
If you install a older version 1st or have a image backup with a older version, install it. Then after installing the older version check for Windows update, you should now be able to install the latest update. 19042.685

To make this process easier for you, there is an automated method that you can use by clicking the Download button at the top of the Tutorial. It contains a standalone .exe file delivered in a .zip file. You just need to Unzip the file and Run SystemInfo.exe. Please note that this file does NOT save ANYTHING to your computer.

I wrote the specs in my initial post and I can repeat them here:
"This is my setup: Windows 10 Pro x64-bit, 20H2, 19042.685, WFEP 120.2212.551.0. I have 83 GB of free space left on the C-disk and that should be enough I hope."
As you can see, I do already have the last version 19042.685. But I can't find the update KB4586853 in my update history. I guess I just have to take a chance then and see if I can update keeping my files. It seems I get a choice to abort the update should it not provide me with this opportunity. At least that is something.
PS I have also updated my computer specs in my profile.

The way I have done this is download the media creation tool. Run it. Then it will have an option to upgrade this PC, choses that, the tool will do an update check by itself, and install any needed updates, just follow the prompts.

I downloaded the latest installation media from Windows and used that in the process. I got as far as to choose to "Keep personal files and apps". That option was pre-chosen so I hit "Next". Then I was looped back to Ready To Install: "Change what to keep". I chose that option and then found myself again at "Keep personal files and apps." I tried one more time and was again looped back to "Change what to keep."
No possibility of getting any further, so I gave up and I will have to restore a backup which unfortunately is 3 weeks old. But this is better than nothing of course.

Solution to Windows Update error KB4586853 - solved with fix
Thank you very much! I'll read it through and copy it down. I have however now used a backup (I saw I had one 14 days old to use instead of the 21 days old file) to get back to a point where everything worked fine and there were no failure messages. It isn't too much to re-enter in fact. I think I'll manage. But the KB4586853 seems to be a tricky one, no doubt. The fix in the link above includes changes to the registry and I'm always wary of that. To clean the cache is a very good thing to do though no matter the circumstances.
Well what i want to know that if I download the Windows 10, version 20H2 ISO file using the media creation toold and instead of using the mount option I unzip/unrar it to a folder (see screenshot 1)
And then proceed with installing it via the setup.exe file (see screenshot 2)
Will it work the same and not create any issue for me. Will such in-place upgrade keep all my files/setting/folder/icon on drive same unchanged. Kindly let me know
