Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Consider this or these algorithm(s):

Preventative maintenance:
sfc /scannow
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
chkdsk /scan

If scannow finds operating system corruption that it fixes or doesn't fix > check results of restorehealth
If restore health fixes scannow corruption > then recheck scannow to make sure it was not a temporary fix
If restore health was unable to fix scannow corruption or if restore health displayed an error > perform in place upgrade repair
If chkdsk /scan finds drive file system problems > perform chkdsk /r overnight
For any problems with windows compare one user account to another. If there are deeper windows problems such as user accounts or registry then clean install or use backup image.
For any malware > run a second or third malware scanning software to see if there are any other detected malware. If there are any doubts > clean install with backup image.

When Dell pushed an Intel video driver update on my wife's XPS-13 laptop, I couldn't boot at all. You need to be abot to boot into Windows in order to do a repair install. All she had was a black screen. Extensive help here at tenforums got me to a point where I could at least boot in safe mode. Repair install still couldn't fix the driver problem.

At that point, I was able to boot from the Macrium USB stick I had made and restore from a recent backup that just preceded the Dell-caused crash.

It also helped that she keeps data on a D: partition. The usable backup was 4 weeks old. The Dell crash was 10 days old. I restored all but the D: partition. I left that alone.

Just wondering if an in-place upgrade repair of 1809 would give rise to the same problems- hopefully MS will have updated the iso, not just tried to fix things in the recent CU.

Further, for anyone who has the original, if the iso has been updated, they'd need to be advised to get a current one.

Thoughts?

If you had a Updated Release of 1809 then yes it should work. But there is none at present time. MS is still trying to figure out what needs to be fix/repaired in this last release.
Just my 2 cents.

I'm about to do this with a USB stick, sorry if it has already been answered. Any chance that the "Download and install updates" option will upgrade Windows itself, for example 1803 to 1809? I'd hate that. My current installation is 1803 both on the PC and the USB.

You need to download an 1803 iso one way or another - e,g, the thread about Kyhi's boot disk at the top of the Software and Apps section, post#3 has an iso tool.

As you have Pro so you can defer feature updates via group policy, and delay quality updates, you do have enough control.

Otherwise (Home) you could perform the upgrade OFFLINE (disconnect) to avoid any possible update issues, then deal with controlling updates.

To avoid 1809 one way would be to disable Windows updates (thread and tool available - search for 'completely') and then use Windows Update Minitool (free) manually.

Thanks, my question is about the repair/in-place installation described in this thread. I already have an ISO (well, a USB stick) that is 1803, as mentioned. My worry is that the recommended option here about enabling "download of updates" will also update Windows from one version to another (1803 to 1809), and not just provide the latest updates for 1803 only. I hope the "defer feature updates" setting will be enough...

I have answered that.

That's making 100% sure.

I have also pointed out you need the right iso for your build.

If you use an 1809 iso, you will upgrade to 1809, so you need to get or use an existing 1803 iso to perform an in-place upgrade repair install.

The Pro features should also protect you.

I did a repair install but I'm still experiencing the Shell Infrastructure Host issue that eventually makes Start and Taskbar unresponsive. I did the Refresh option. Is it worth trying the Reset option or should I just go to Clean Install?
