I have had repeated failures to install the Windows 1803 Update using Windows Update, getting error code 0x8007042B. Today I have tried a Repair Install as per this thread, which has worked for me in the past, but this time it also failed with error message 0x8007042B - 0x2000D "The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with and error during MIGRATE-DATA operation". The failure was at 27% in the last part of Item 13 in the tutorial.

It seems that this might be a corrupt driver but analysing the WindowsUpdate.Log attached I can't find the error code reported and don't understand the other messages included. Please can you advise how I can track down the cause of the error and eliminate it?Attachment 192153

    Hello @balein,

0x8007042B = An operation attempted to exceed an implementation-defined limit.

    OR

0x8007042B = The process terminated unexpectedly.

0x2000D = Installation failed in second phase "SP_EXECUTION_SAFE_OS"...

    0x2000D = .... during SP_EXECUTION_OP_MIGRATE_DATA

How much free space do you have available on your Windows "C" drive, and how much is currently being used?

It is an 111GB SSD drive and there was 39GB free at the time of the update. For information I have relocated my User files to the E drive using the process detailed on your forum. This was done right at the launch of Win 10 and has successfully upgrading since then with no problems.

Sometimes having folders like that one moved to another location could cause upgrade issues.

39GB is getting a bit on the low side considering how much space is used for "C:\Windows.old", but should have been enough.

As a test, try this below to see if you may be able to successfully do the repair install afterwards:

    1) Move your User files back to C.

    2) Free up more drive space on C if able.

    3) If you have a 3rd party AV installed, make sure it's disabled or uninstalled before doing the repair install. Sometimes they can interfere with the upgrade process.

The 39GB was after windows.old was created. I have now cleared out installation files and am back up to 47GB free. My OneDrive is in E already.

I had already uninstalled Kaspersky and had disconnected all unnecessary USB accessories before trying the repair upgrade.

It is not possible to fit my user files in E: back on C: as they are about 300GB and I think it would be easier to just start again with a clean install when I have some spare time. Do you still recommend using the sysprep method to relocate the user folders? (as posed to just changing the location of the user folders in the location tab). Would I be best to also back up my E drive and then reformat this as well to ensure there is nothing that could upset the install?

Personally, I don't like moving user folders since it could cause issues (ex: broken links) when trying to reinstall or upgrade. Instead, I like to have folders where I want on another drive, and just add that folder to the appropriate library to access everything from Libraries.

You could do a clean install without affecting what's on the E drive.

Relocating the complete Users folder with Sysprep when performing a clean install (tutorial) is completely 100% safe and working method. Absolutely everything user account and profile related will be relocated to another drive, including AppData and such system folders for each user, in addition to user data folders. The relocation will be automatically done every time when a new user account will be created, all user profile folders being created on new location.

Relocating complete Users folder does not cause any link, update or upgrade issues. Sysprep will take care of that in system level by modifying all environment variables and registry entries.

I am currently using Windows Insider Preview Build 17686 with Users folder relocated to drive E: without any whatsoever issues. My C: (Windows) drive does not contain anything user profile related as can be seen in screenshot:

Notice that the screenshot is showing hidden and protected system files, too, just to show that Users folder really isn't there.

I have used the Sysprep method on each and every of my computers since 2006 and first Windows Vista beta versions, never having any issues because of a broken link, nor have I had any issues with updates and upgrades.

Thanks for your support and the reassurances on sysprep - I still have the relocate.xml file I originally used so I will re read the tutorial and do that when I have a free day. Won't be immediately as PC still working fine with Build 1709, apart from a few minor issues. Will report back when finished.

    You are welcome.

I forgot to mention that as there will be no issues in upgrading even with relocated Users folder, regarding to topic of this tutorial it naturally also means that there will be no issues in doing a repair install, which is basically nothing else than an in-place upgrade using same Windows version and build.

With "no issues" I mean no relocating related issues; of course there might be other issues preventing upgrade and repair installs.

    Win10 Pro - x64 latest build dual boot w/Win 11 Pro

I have a multi-boot, 1 W7 and 2 W10 Pro and 1 Win10 Enterprise. My main boot is Win7 but for some reason the 1st Win10 Pro has corrupted (BSOD with a smiley saying sorry and some error code). The other 2 are fine thus far. I tried start up repair from the DVD I created and it failed 4 times. So I'm assuming this tute is my best option, but I have a question. In previous iterations of Windows I seem to recall being able to go straight into Advanced Repair options by clicking setup.exe in another folder on the DVD, can that still be done here, say I'm in Win7 and I want to repair the Win 10 in the next partition. (All the Win 10's were installed from my Win 7 OS. In other words can I do this from Win 7 - will it ask me which drive I wish to repair?

    Hello Peter,

I'm afraid you would need to run setup.exe from within Windows 10 to be able to do a repair install (in-place upgrade) of the Windows 10 installation.

If you run it from within Windows 7, it would upgrade W7 to W10.
