Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

As long as the ISO is for the same version, language, and 32/64-bit as what you have installed, it should work.

Are you able to use the ISO file instead.

Just to note, you can only perform a repair install from within the running Windows, and not at boot.

I did it from inside Windows 10. I still have the ISO and will stick it on a flash drive and mount it.

Good day! I've a quick question. Will it be alright to perform a repair install as mentioned but by using an older ISO? I'm planning to do a repair install by using a Windows 10 1607 ISO on my current build (1709). I've been noticing a drop in performance on some of my games with the new update and I want to go back to the previous build. I can't do the 'Go back to previous build' option in the settings since I accidentally deleted my Windows.old folder. Thanks!

I believe that is alright, so long as you do not check to install updates :)

Please notice, I have never tried repair install with older build install media. The below is just my thoughts, not something I know for sure. Thoughts and logics, not known facts:

As repair install replaces system files with new ones, system files on current installation being replaced with those on install media being used, I have it hard to believe that it would work.

Repair install is technically speaking an in-place upgrade install. You cannot downgrade install Windows 10, go back to an earlier version of Windows (exception: restoring previous Windows version through Windows Update during the grace period).

Based on above, I am relatively sure that "downgrade", repair install using media for a previous Windows 10 version will not only fail but might in worst case scenario totally brick the PC.

I've just tried a 1709 to 1607 'downgrade' on my test machine. No, it won't brick the PC - but it won't let you keep installed apps or files either.

The only option the Setup allows is 'keep nothing' - the others are greyed out.

Good to know. I think this makes it clear, no repair or downgrade install keeping your stuff with older version. As told at the bottom of your screenshot, it clearly states that nothing can be kept if you are using older install media.

Sorry @ajay123 that your first post on TenForums is a bit of a disappointment. But don't give up on us. Start another thread, there are plenty of gamers here who may well be able to help you speed up your games on 1709.

Sorry for the late reply. It's not really that much of a letdown since I can always backup my files :) Thanks for clearing this up, @Bree, @Kari and @axe0 I was hesitating since I've messed up my laptop more than once before XD Anyways, thanks for the help. Really, means a lot.
