I have an issue with a game, which the author suggests might be caused by "mismatched" DLLs. In a VM, the problem goes away, but the game is too sluggish to play. Given that Avast, SFC, and DISM all gave my system a clean bill of health, is it likely that an In-place Upgrade will help?

It depends on if these .dll files are system files or installed by the game.
If from the game, a repair install will not help. Reinstalling the game may.
If they are Windows system files, then you might try running a SFC /SCANNOW command first to see if it may help.
I already tried SFC, and the game is portable with no DLLs. I ruled out the game, and the Indeo and DirectX 9 files in installed by experimenting in a VM. I also tried a clean boot.
Just thinking out loud.... Now that MS has the Reset function under Recovery pretty well nailed down, it should be a piece of cake to add In-Place as the 3rd and missing option. Maybe it's too obvious.......

Not directly. It replaces system files with those of the build of the iso file or installation disk employed. That is, typically an older version of the same build. Certain other changes may be made in the registry, and more to restore your Windows installation to a functional state.
One of the results may be to repair (in your case) Windows Update.
Subsequent to the in-place upgrade repair, Windows Update will run as normal - if it has been repaired by the in-place upgread repair.
There are other ways of fixing Windows Update- but if you think your Windows is corrupt in other ways, then use this.

Just want to say a very big thank you. I'd been unable to update my computer for several month without running in to a stop code error, after spending many hours on multiple occations trying to repair a DISM error but to no avail, so carried out a Windows 10 repair/upgrade as outlined in this article, and it worked!!!
It retained all my data, while sorting out the issues with my on disc Windows 10 image.Thank you so much i was dreading a 20 hour marathon reinstall and setting everything back to how it was.
You will be glad to here my computer is now updating with no issues at all and im very happy!
