Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

    In-place repair/install worked for one user account only


    An in-place repair/install worked great for the Administrator account, from which the install was initiated. This work was done to repair a corrupted Windows 10 menu. The menu issues (missing tiles and missing items above Power to the left of Apps) remain when the regular user account is launched. I have manually added a few tiles, but they do not update.

    Had I done the work from the regular user account (which is an administrator account), would the repairs have been implemented for both accounts?

    An in-place upgrade repair will almost certainly not fix user profile issues. There's a troubleshooter and tutorials relating to the start menu, and you can also re-register it.

    How will the in-place upgrade repair be affected now you can’t have any USB drives connected when upgrading/updating to 1903?
    I would think we’d have to start using MCT directly or a DVD.

    If you use the MCT to make the ISO then you can just mount it to perform the upgrade as per Step 4.

    If you only have the USB, then a workaround is to copy Setup.exe from the root of your USB and its Sources folder to a temporary folder on your HDD, then run Setup from there. You can delete the temporary folder when done. I have done just that to upgrade one of my machines.

    Something I’ve noticed which I hadn’t before:
    I decided to do a clean install & noticed when I booted from the USB there was an option to do an in-place repair (keeping everything).
    Tbh I haven’t done a clean install for a while so perhaps it’s been there for a while.

    It was the version of 1903 released Tuesday Brink, I downloaded it via the MCT website.
