On a related note, Brink, would appreciate any input you might have on my little issue with misbehaving taskbar icons :)

I was forced to do a Repair Install due to problems creating a Guest account (see my most recent post in this thread: Windows 10 Forums

I completed all steps through Step 13 (I think). At that point, a tradesman arrived at my front door. From the tutorial, I could see that none of the remaining screens would work until the user pressed a button, so I attended to the tradesman.

However, when I returned to my laptop, the usual Win 10 login screen had been presented. This means that I was given no opportunity to accept or reject tutorial steps 14 through 18. Step 19 is the login dialog.

I simply assumed that the tutorial might not perhaps have been updated to take account of all the recent flood of Windows updates, so maybe steps 14 through 18 no longer apply. I thought the whole Repair Install had been completed with no further intervention on my part. (Everything happened fairly quickly - despite the fact that the tutorial said "This will take a while".)

If I had not been distracted by the tradesman, I would probably have logged in to my own account at that point, and done a quick sanity check to ensure that everything was as expected. I think (with hindsight - see later) that immediately after login, the Repair Install would have resumed and continued.

Instead, I immediately clicked the icon for the "Kids" account. (The reason for the Repair Install was because after login to the Kids account, users were automatically logged out after a few seconds. All this is discussed in one of Brink's other excellent tutorials: Add Guest Account in Windows 10 - Page 3 - User Accounts Tutorials )

But as soon as I clicked the "Kids" icon, the screen went completely black

For safety, I did absolutely nothing for about an hour. During that time, the power was on and the keyboard was backlit. I assumed the OS had been blown away by logging in to the Kids account. So I switched off the power and went to bed.

In the morning, I switched power on. The screen was still black, although the keyboard was backlit. I then spent about half-an hour on my Vostro googling for some assistance, and trying some of my rescue CDs, such as the Macrium Rescue CD (which would not boot - lucky for me). So the power button was off and on several times.

Suddenly the login screen for the "Kids" account was again presented on the Asus :). That was the second time the login screen had been presented.

This time, I changed to my own account. No further automatic activity occurred, so I did some thorough checking of random apps an progs. Everything was fine.

I switched to the Kids account, and that worked perfectly as well (previously a login was followed by an instantaneous logout).

My idiot's theory about all this mess is that the Repair Install was silently working away in the background, stoutly resisting all my attempts to reboot, and with the power button being switched off/on several times.

My theory for the black screen is that the display elements shown in the tutorial could only be displayed in my account. But since I was in the Kids account for the second part of the Repair Install (see above), these screen elements could not be displayed. (I'm not sure how buttons would have been "pressed". Maybe the program simply assumed all options and buttons to be the default values.)I'm assuming that login screens do not belong to anyone's account, so login screens were presented twice.

Anyway, despite the comedy of errors, everything is now working OK :)

    Hello @OldGrantonian, :)

I just did a repair install on build 17017, and steps 14-18 were no longer there for me either. That will certainly make it even easier to perform now.

I'll remove these unneeded steps now.

It has been sitting on 3% for over an hour...

Using a CD instead of an ISO and the drive acts as though it is being read at infrequent rate meaning that it is being used.

EDIT: Well it failed and the only reason I can find is the version, I am running 16299.64 and the latest ISO I can find is 16299.15. Any resolution???
